Alive is the blistering new single from the up-and-coming Indie-Rock trio Trimm. Formed in Clackmannanshire, the three-piece have followed their brilliant 2017 E.P Innocent Gun with another banger in the form of Alive. This new track continues to showcase the band’s sound, which is an intriguing mix of influences from throughout rock history. The energy of blues trios like The Jimi Hendrix Experience, the attitude of early Artic Monkeys and the anthemic catchiness of Oasis is all blended perfectly into an aggressive and utterly addictive new song.
The main guitar hook is the centrepiece of the track, and you will be hard-pressed to find a leaner or catchier riff. No frills. No trills. As it should be. It is expertly crafted to bore its way into your ears. The verse is carried by Jacob Franklyn’s gravely tones and his attitude as a frontman shines through in the way he delivers his lyrics, sometimes with an almost drunken abandon. The drumming provided by Michael Wareing is dynamic and accents the main riff, giving the group a sound of cohesion that undoubtedly adds to the energy of the track. The chorus is a perfect release of the energy that is built in the raucous verse. The combination of driving power chords and sing-a-long lyrics create a hook that’s really hard to forget. It’s reminiscent of a Stone Roses-type refrain, albeit much grittier. Throughout the track Frankyln adds some well-executed guitar licks and gives a solo that sounds like a barrage of attacks on the guitar strings; a great addition to the rawness of their sound. Throughout the track, all three members show a clear understanding of their respective roles and each part is executed perfectly.
Unlike many other group, Trimm have went into the studio and came out still sounding like a band. Their energy, their interplay and their fun still remains. There is not a single extraneous part of this arrangement: hardly a moment is spared on introductions as the band come crashing in to show you what they’re all about. Flying from indie riff to energetic chorus, this track shows that these guys know how to craft a burst of catchy brilliance. Alive is a great addition to Trimm’s discography and I am very eager to hear what their next offering will be.
