With a line-up bursting with great local music from Plasmas, Novella and, a band unknown to me, Glasgow lads, The Vanities it promised to be a great night and it was so.
First up were Psychedelic outfit Plasmas. After seeing the lads countless times and being somewhat of a Plasmas expert I thought I knew what I was in for from them. Starting with their debut single Overblown it was a solid start, I felt as though I was waiting on them to burst into the energetic band we all know and love, but I never really felt like that happened. A lot could be blamed on the size of Conroy’s stage with little room to breath let alone dance and express themselves on. Although their most recent single “Spark” was and always well be a class tune and is the perfect end to their set. In all it was a good performance by the lads just not up to the fantastic usual standards.
Next up were Glasgow 4 piece The Vanities. I was going into their performance deaf to their sound having failed to look them up prior to the gig and looking back now that was a massive error on my part. The punk outfit came firing out the gates, playing some absolute bangers such as “Gang culture” and their newest single “She’s shambolic” which was This Feelings track of the day and has gained a lot of traction and well-deserved praise since its release. They ended on probably one of my favourite ever renditions of Johnny B Goode by Chuck Berry, turning the tempo up to 11 and turning it into the punkiest song you’ve ever heard it truly was a sight, or should I say sound, to behold. Their set left me wanting more, which is definitely what you want from a band, and excited at the idea of seeing them in the future.
Last but definitely not least were Novella. As with Plasmas I have had the pleasure of seeing Novella play live multiple times and felt like I’ve seen a large portion of their progression. They have come on leaps and bounds since the first time I caught them at Church earlier in the year with a sense of professionalism and relaxation on stage. They had the audience on strings from the start and were controlling the entire venue with their breath-taking guitar riffs and catchy vocals. Playing classics such as “Plastic Rose” which had even the most stubborn musical critics dancing and singing along. They also gave us a listen of what I believe is going to be their next single “What’s mine” and in my opinion that is their best tune to date. Plenty more to come from the lads as they seem to just be getting started.
Once again a great gig put on by This Feeling and an increase in attendance from recent Dundee gigs, long may it continue!
