You just can’t beat a Friday night gig at Sleazy’s … cold pints, a uniquely wonderful atmosphere and of course, the exciting live music! I was lucky enough to catch, Glaswegian Indie Alternative band, Slouch there a few weeks ago and what a gig it was…
Prior to the gig, I'd been listening a lot to Slouch on Spotify just to get an idea of what to expect. Nevertheless, as much as they’re a good audio band, nothing compares to their live performance!
There’s six members of the band and although Daniel, the guitarist joked, they struggle with fitting the entire band on stage sometimes, each individual member brings their own unique touch which gives Slouch that extra bit of character that not every band can grasp.
After the pre-gig podcast (I'll leave the link below) and a couple of beers with the band, it was time for the support...
Primes
First on was Falkirk Alternative Rock trio, Primes. It was definitely a treat to see them opening the set! It’s been a while since I’ve heard such vocals between a female and a male that harmonise so well together. The sound just flows perfectly and both vocalists really complement each other – especially live! I’m really excited to see what's in store for Primes over the next few months… not only have they just released an amazing new single, ‘Nine Lives’ but they’re also playing King Tuts and Bute Festival this summer – Check them out!
Layaway
Next on to the stage were Layaway, a Glaswegian Rock band! Although, this was the first time I’d came across the band, at first instance I was impressed. I do feel there’s a need for more rock bands in Scotland and Layaway certainly bring something different to the scene. With their strong vocals and vibrant guitar riffs, they remind me a little of 30 Seconds to Mars. It was a professional performance and I’ll definitely be making a point to see them again!
Slouch
Finally, it was time for the headliners to take stage. After spending a few hours with the band before, I was really intrigued to see what they would be collectively on stage. They started the set with Lucid Trap, my favourite Slouch song, as soon as I heard the thrilling bass line, I was just totally in my element. Expectations truly exceeded themselves, as after a few seconds of playing, it was clear they belonged on stage!
The passion from all six members was a clear indication of just how good, Slouch really are. They all just put in so much energy to each set and it’s amazing to witness. The atmosphere from the crowd was incredible and you could tell a lot of them were real fans.
I have a feeling that not one Slouch gig will be the same and I hope that is the case... Too many bands are too well-polished these days so it’s nice to see a band who just go with the flow and perform in the moment. You never know what to expect next which is the beauty of it!
Prior to the gig, I was told that they were going to do a secret cover and judging by their indie music tastes I was expecting more along the lines of Oasis or Stone Roses. You can imagine my surprise when they burst out with the classic, ‘Love at First Sight’ by Kylie Minogue! Nevertheless, the cover sounded better than the original due to the fact, they really made it their own.
It’s funny cause I usually compare bands when reviewing gigs however, I can’t really compare Slouch to anyone else in the music industry as their sound is so different to anything I have heard before... from three guitarists, a drummer, a synthesist and a lead singer all performing at the same time – you can imagine it to be one hell of a gig!
Ending the set with their latest single, ‘In Your Mind’, it was a strong finish to the end of a brilliant set. The band just bring a sense of excitement to their gigs which totally leaves the crowd wanting more.
I feel this is just the start of Slouch and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for them in the future.
Definitely check the guys out on Spotify if you get the chance but better still go and see them perform live – you won’t regret it!
