Here at Discovery Music we are lucky enough to get pre-release access to some of the most exciting music coming out of Scotland. This next single is definitely no exception. VanIves (pronounced Van-ie-ves) are a self proclaimed "multi-genre-bending" two piece from the South West of the country. The band consists of Stuart Ramage (vocals & guitar) and Roan Ballentine (producer, keys & DJ) as you can imagine this clash of analogue and electronic talent make a delightfully different end product. 2018 was a big year for the duo releasing two singles "Positive" and "Corder" which gained airplay on Amazing Radio and BBC Scotland, as well as supporting the likes of Tokio Myres and Be Charlotte. It's fantastic to see that these guys intend on keeping up the momentum going into 2019 with their most recent single "Pyramids."
The track kicks off with some easy going vocals that draw attention right from the off. Soon these vocals are joined with some distant piano and very minimal electronic percussion. Around 45 seconds in the track goes up a gear with the piano being replaced with a dreamy synth sound and some almost lazy sounding percussion (lazy in a good way). The track seems to build forever to eventually stop tricking your mind into thinking that it's over, but that would be too obvious. Sure enough it kicks back in more powerful with more samples and some backing vocals which seem to polish off the track.
2019 sees a great year of opportunity for this duo and I can't wait to see where it takes them. I will be in attendance at their CCA Glasgow headline show on the 31st of this month and strongly urge everyone reading this to get along too.
