SINGLE REVIEW | Felix And The Sunsets - The Wrong Era

Updated: Aug 1, 2019

Punk three-piece, Felix And The Sunsets are quickly becoming a very recognizable band within the Scottish scene, having just released their latest single “The Wrong Era”, they are quickly gaining a lot of recognition, and rightly so!

Felix And The Sunsets describe themselves as “imaginative garage rockers” hailing from Leith, Edinburgh. Their tunes are powerful and vibrant, with inspiration coming from artists like Jimi Hendrix and Jack White. Previous singles such as “Who’s Happiness is this?” and “Don’t sleep” showcase strong vocals and their latest single “The Wrong Era” has the exact same punchy vibe to it which I really like. It takes real talent for a band to have a distinctive sound but still be able to make every record sound different and fresh!

The new track immediately erupts into a fast, punky sound. The opening lyrics quickly state the song title which I am a big fan of. “I was born in the wrong era” are prominent, recurring lyrics throughout the tune with the surrounding lyrics often rhyming which really makes the record flow perfectly. There is a steady but upbeat tune behind the lyrics, consisting of mighty guitars and powerful drums. Punk music and almost a sense of rebellion are clear influences for this record, it is making a clear statement, “I was born in the wrong place, wrong time”. The lyrics very much focus on not fitting and not complying with modern society’s high standards, which is very relatable for the band’s audience and young people in general. The tempo changes towards the end of the tune and becomes slower, with the outro being purely instrumental, which I think is needed to balance the record out. It then comes to a sudden end, which again is very punky and fits perfectly with the bands overall style.

This is only the beginning for Felix And The Sunsets and they have already bagged impressive support slots, particularly the main support for The Van T’s at a sold out Sneaky Pete’s! Their singles have also been played on air by popular Scottish music industry figure, Jim Gellatly on Amazing Radio and they have also caught the eye of one of the UK’s most popular grassroots music promotors, This Feeling. Felix And The Sunsets are only going to continue to grow and project their unique sound across Scotland and beyond, ones to watch for sure!
