SINGLE REVIEW | TH13VES - 'Angel'

Updated: Mar 27, 2019

Th13ves (Thirteen Thieves) are an up and coming band that are continuing to grow in 2019. The 4 piece from Dundee, consisting of Alan Turner (vocals/guitar), Ronnie Falconer (bass/vocals), Paddy Brown (lead guitar) and Gordon “Gogs” McInally (drums) smashed 2018 with their first two hit singles ‘Dreamers’ and ‘Casino’. Th13ves found great success last year, having supported fellow Dundonian, Kyle Falconer, many times as well as supporting Pretty Vicious at King Tuts in Glasgow and playing EH6 Festival, not bad for their first few months as a band! The boys are back this year with their highly anticipated new single ‘Angel’, and it is nothing short of an absolute banger to say the least!

The track was recorded at Magic Box in Dundee and the melody hits you right from the offset, like any true anthem should! ‘Angel’ starts with steady drums and rising guitars before exploding into an upbeat melody that would easily get any crowd bouncing. There are a couple of similarities in terms of the melody, between ‘Angel’ and Th13ves’ last two singles, which helps to show their style perfectly and makes them instantly recognisable as a band.

The vocals kick in quite early and have a raspy edge to them which instantly reminds the listener of a Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds type of vibe. The bridge is instrumental, which helps to break up the verses perfectly. The listener is then thrown into an eruptive, catchy chorus. ‘Angel’ has a repetitive chorus which captures the essence of the tune flawlessly, “You flew as high, high as an angel could” with the first “high” being held for a couple of seconds. The optimistic melody behind the vocals makes the track very addictive and definitely one to be heard live!

Backing vocals are introduced in the second verse, which adds a whole new dimension to the song and compliments the main vocals superbly. As the track progresses, it becomes very apparent that this is a love song, possibly about wanting to be with someone and it just not being manageable. ‘Angel’ has an instrumental fade out, which is effective as it ends the same way it starts and leaves the listener wanting to hear more.

Overall, it is clear that this tune will be extremely popular amongst the Scottish scene and with the catchy melody and lyrics, it is definitely one to be heard live! Good news for fans as Th13ves are touring very soon, they play their first headline show at Conroys Basement in Dundee on 30th March which sold out in just over 48 hours! For those who didn’t manage to get tickets, they also play Hootenanny’s in Inverness on 5th April and The Priory in Glasgow on 18th May and no doubt they will sell out too so best to get tickets as soon as possible! Th13ves also have a music video for ‘Angel’ that was filmed at West Word Works in Dundee so be sure to give that a watch.
