SINGLE REVIEW | Ruvellas- 'Sick & Tired'/'Still the Same'

Ruvellas- 'Sick & Tired'/'Still the Same'

Originally formed in 2014 under the name Room-One, Dundee five-piece Ruvellas have had a pretty impressive start to their time in the Scottish music industry. After attaining some of the most exciting support slots in the Scottish scene for bands such as The Dunts and The Snuts, it’s fair to say that the Dundonian teenagers are well on their road to success.

Being recognised for their talents by big names in Scottish music such as Scottish Sun columnist Jim Gellatly, Ruvellas had a fair bit of hype to live up to when they released their Double A side single ‘Sick & Tired/Still the Same’. The single came crashing onto the digital airwaves on Boxing Day last year which also saw the boys host their single launch at one of Dundee’s most infamous and intimate venues, Church.

‘Sick & Tired’ gives off a semi sultry and slow, primarily vocals based first verse from frontman Aiden Stuart with distinctly mature vocals for someone so young. The tune deeply mirrors the Britpop tracks of the 90s made famous by the likes of Oasis and The Verve with almost moody vocals, reminding us of an early Liam Gallagher. Around two minutes into the track, the tune erupts with an impressive guitar solo, which really does make the song the great tune it is. The mood of the track is mellow yet strong and the almost acapella finish of the song ends in the same fashion it begins- passionate and melodic.

The second track ‘Still the Same’ immediately reminds us of the work of Sergeant’s Nick Mercer Jr, giving the same bouncy rhythms and nostalgic tones which made the Fife band so popular. The perfectly calm yet upbeat song is the perfect answer to a summer day track. The type of song you listen to chilling in the sun with your pals with the sun shining. Setting the same scene as Alloa band Vida, Ruvellas have done a sophisticated job in portraying in their tracks what it’s like to be young and in a relationship with the problems which can arise while still making you feel content and optimistic.

The Double A side single also features a bonus track named ‘Left Alone’ with the same spirited tones as ‘Sick & Tired’ and ‘Still the Same’ and is worth checking out. Overall, if these tracks are anything to go by, Ruvellas are destined for great success and hopefully we will be hearing more from the band soon.

Catch Ruvellas at Forthside Festival in Stirling in May and witness their talents for yourself.
