Edinburgh indie rockers Retro Video Club bring heartfelt edge and contemporary rock ‘n’ roll vibes to their new single ‘Night In’.
The four pieces’ single, their newest material since their single release ‘Addiction’ in March, is one which makes a great addition to the current indie rock circuit in Scotland this summer.
The elements that drive this single are definitely the combination of the guitar tone and the focus on the lyrics. It’s a song which is not swarming with instruments fighting to take control of the track, rather one which allows the vocals to take centre stage whilst the guitar, bass and drums provide a subtle, yet memorable accompaniment.
The changing pace of the guitar rhythm is what separates the track into its distinct parts, changing from the fuelled, faster chorus’ to the quieter, slowed down verses. With the drums and bass acting as the driving force of the track, all the elements fit together perfectly.
Moreover, I can always appreciate a band whose vocals demonstrate a clear Scottish accent. It makes the whole song sound so raw and intimate, further enhancing the meaning of the song. In terms of the meaning behind ‘Night In’, you could say the lyrics communicate a more modern way of telling someone your feelings; such as ‘there is no one else I would rather spend a night in with’. It is this unique approach to the overall effect of the single that makes it different from your average love song.
But, I doubt that the band are eager for this type of night often, as the four piece are creating a storm across the country at the moment. Having played on the King Tuts stage at Glasgow’s TRNSMT last weekend, its success after success for these boys.
