SINGLE REVIEW | RASCALTON - 'EDDY'

From the moshpit—worthy This Is It to youth anthem Lost Generation, it’s hard not to enjoy a song by Rascalton. It’s even harder not to enjoy one which features the lyric ‘stole my picture just to get your hole’.

Eddy, the Glasgow punks’ first release since their CSC EP last May, is an early b-side to their next release Employee of the Month // Eddy, due to hit the scene on Council Records in April. It’s a song which can be likened to a fast-paced rollercoaster - the drums and bass ease you in as you ascend before the guitar and vocals kick in, sending you down the slope and into the madness of the song, which clocks in at just under 1 minute 40 seconds.

Rascalton released the song alongside a Facebook post which included the biting message ‘EDDY, if you’re reading this – fuck you’. As you can work out from the lyrics, the song tells the story of a catfishing incident in which lead singer Jack Wyles got word that his picture was circulating on Tinder, under the name ‘Eddy’. Whoever our Eddy may be, what better way to name and shame than calling him out in a song which crowds across the country go mad for?

The repeated chant of ‘my name’s not Eddy’ in the chorus is easy to pick up and always goes down a treat live, and a simple yet effective guitar melody provides a neat bridge between the final two choruses of the song. The bass line in the chorus and the overall style of the song is reminiscent of old 50s/60s rock n roll, but with an undeniable modern punk edge which brings it right back to present day Glasgow and the incredible punk scene the city is becoming known for amongst music fans. And has you disliking this Eddy guy as if it was your picture he stole.

Now would be a very good time to hop aboard the Rascalton train as it’s shaping up to be an incredibly exciting year for them – this coming week they’ll be heading stateside for the first time to play SXSW in Austin, Texas, a festival also being played by their Glasgow brothers The Dunts. The band’s next gig on Scottish soil will be at Edinburgh’s La Belle Angele as part of the Wide Days Festival Takeover in April.
