SINGLE REVIEW | PARLIAMO | 'YOUTH'

Underground pop boys Parliamo put a vibrant Scottish twist on a relatable event for many with new single 'Youth'.

Parliamo have been rising up in the Scottish music stakes recently. With an impressive support slot for The Snuts back in 2018 and a hometown show on Boxing Day, 2018 ended well for the Perth boys and 2019 is only set to take the lads even further.

Released on the 7th of June, new track 'Youth' brings a punchy and spirited take on losing your virginity with an added Scottish spin of the event taking place at a party in a scheme in the north of Perth. Now, that doesn’t sound too glitzy or flashy but that is the exact point that the song captures. In the modern-day world of “romantic” social media relationships and Oscar-worthy romantic films, losing your virginity is often set on a pedestal of romanticism's but in reality, that’s often not how it is.

The track eases in for the first few seconds as an energetic guitar beat starts to flood in with a strong backing drum rhythm which heightens as the initial intro of the track ends. The lead vocals on the track are the perfect balance of an inviting Scottish accent with a hint of charm and an added punk energy. Halfway through the track, the instruments fade and for a moment the track is lyrically focused but with the same upbeat energy that we expect from Parliamo.

The chorus of the tune boasts the lyrics of “It’s alright, it’s OK, come and take my youth away”. Lyrically, this helps to illustrate the story which is told through the song of two youths at a party who are ready to take that next step. The track then at around two minutes in, builds to a point of a lively and enthusiastic guitar rhythm which really takes the track to the next level. The final lyrics of the track come to a great exaggerated and solid end as the final beat seeps out into a striking finish.

This underground pop five-piece really are a band to keep up with as they are already catching the eyes of Jim Gellatly and Radio X. Influenced by the likes of John Cooper-Clarke who also notably influenced great Brit bands such as Arctic Monkeys, we are sure that Parliamo will release more tracks with the same zest and lively feeling that 'Youth' brings. You can listen to 'Youth' here and find the bands social pages below, where you can find more info on where to catch the boys live for yourself at one of their upcoming tour dates- don’t miss out!
