Brash, bonkers and fucking brilliant! Fiendz YT's latest single is the musical equivalent of being bludgeoned over the back of the head with a rusty crowbar.
Where it lacks in subtlety it excels in furious energy and raucous punky rock 'n roll, by doing so it cements the group as one of the most exciting talents emerging from the prosperous Glasgow scene.
A band who often concern themselves with shock value can be a troubling thing indeed. It's one thing to announce yourself to the world with a debut single entitled "Tesco Elvis" but another to follow it up with a sophomore effort delightfully named "Speed in My Coffee". Luckily Fiendz YT have yet again produced something that lives up to the absurdity of it's title and more.
"Intensity rate gets higher"
Four words tossed around a few lines deep into the latest Fiendz YT hit. They ironically could be used to describe the tune itself, for that's essentially the role "Speed In My Coffee" serves as a successor to "Tesco Elvis". It's an upping of the stakes in almost every regard.
The guitars are both looser and heavier sounding at every violent twist and turn. At one instant there appears what might be two solos occurring over the top of each other?Yet still somehow it works remarkably well!
They're well complemented by drums that have never sounded more frenzied and bass lines which have never appeared more outraged and towering.
It all comes together to craft an intimidating mix!
There are echos of Slaves, Idles and perhaps more interestingly Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs at various points throughout the track, all bands which serve as touchstones in the modern heavy/punk scene.
Fiendz YT take what works best about these current day classics, condense and compact them into a swifter leaner three minute song and then add their own Glaswegian spin.
It's an effectively consistent winning formula.
The lyrics are brash, unapologetic and all the while retain the charming anarchic wit firmly established in "Tesco Elvis". They come delivered in a manner that is laced in both fury and appears to suggest a lack of care but at the same time also adds an effective honest element to the track.
It's a symptom present in the majority of Fiendz YT's work, taking something that shouldn't work but instead making it do so and then using it excellently to your advantage.
However, what's most impressive about the song is the widening expansion of the soundscape compared to their debut release. As mentioned prior the mix is powerfully intimidating (credits to the superb Chris Marshall, Johnny Madden and Jamie Holmes once again).
The entire song possess a larger sounding quality, particularly in the build up to the thunderous conclusion where the group have never sounded more gargantuan. This leads neatly into a maddeningly beautiful climax which proceeds to drive the song home to a spectacular conclusion.
"Speed In My Coffee" is another relentless venture into the chaotic world of Fiendz YT. Heard live the listener is likely to come out sufficiently bruised and battered on the other side but they'll be all the better for it!
Like all great tunes it leaves you impatient to see what the group will produce next but if Fiendz YT can top this then we are in the presence of something truly special!
