From the very first second of Fergus Upton's debut single 'Chosen Romance' you know its going to be one of those easy breezy summer tracks. The ideal combination of soft and expressive, it's a song that is delicately feel good and charmingly low-key.
The young singer-songwriter, hailing from Aberdeen, is only just starting out his music career, but you would not be able to tell by the quality of his first release. It's apparent that he put a lot of effort into this song, from the emotional touch of the sombre lyrics to the feel good, pop-indie vibe of the music.
The track almost feels like you're tenderly stepping into Upton's life; it has an imtimate feel to the song. Lyrics such as 'how do you know that I changed my name and number' hint that the song has a very sentimental, personal meaning, but at no point do the lyrics become too soppy or overemotional, it is subtle enough to make you feel something.
Very similar to that of The Hunna or Catfish and The Bottlemen, the track combines core indie elements from flowy guitar rhythms to teases of experimental touches throughout. The upbeat chorus is a clever contrast to the slower paced verses, as it creates an enjoyable build up which really brings the song to life.
However, it does feel like the song could have done with that little bit extra. At times it became a tad predictable as there was no defining part of the song that really pushed itself out from the rest of the song's elements.
But as a whole, 'Chosen Romance' is a strong debut for Upton, who clearly has the knowledge and talent required to excel in his field. For being only seventeen, Fergus Upton is one to keep an eye on, and this single is a perfect start to keep fans hooked while they wait for more music.
