SINGLE REVIEW | CRYSTAL - 'SPEAK OF THE DEVIL'

‘Speak of the Devil’, is the new gritty, hazy and killer track from one of Glasgow’s leading bands in the music scene, CRYSTAL.

Opening with a repetitive riff which drifts into frontwoman Anna Shields beatific vocals, the ever so slight fuzz of the verse combines a distorted grunge ambience, heightened by the slightly sinister meaning of the lyrics, with a voice that sounds like its meant for the exact opposite. But this is what CRYSTAL flourish in. They manage to get the balance of beauty and grit just right.

Even when the build-up to the chorus comes around, when the song gets punchier and tenacious, the band don’t lose that essence of grace. The harmony on ‘Can’t get you out of my head’ screams girl power, and with the talent of Shields and bassist Lizzie Reid together in the band, CRYSTAL has more killer presence from these two women alone than your average band.

The piercing chorus is complete with pounding drums and raucous guitar. Even though they provide the driving force throughout the whole song, it’s when all the elements combine for the chorus when the song really kicks into full spirit. A classic punk rock style guitar solo, along with chanting vocals round the song off to a fazed out finish.

It’s a track that gives the likes of Black Honey and Wolf Alice a challenge, and it’s really not surprising CRYSTAL are as popular as they are. ‘Speak of the Devil’ is only the fourth single from the band, but with their impressive experience and popularity, it’s evident there is a lot more mystique and magic to come.

Catch them supporting Courtney Barnett, tickets here.
