Having recently began working with the formidable force of Electric Honey, ‘the most successful student run label in the world’, Chris Greig and The Merchants new single ‘Colours’ is an indie pop lesson in how to craft a sharp hook.
The four piece have been doing the rounds in the Glasgow music scene and beyond for a couple of years now, with frontman Chris’ ability to write a chorus having been evident from the start. I’ve caught them a few times live, once early on where potential was obvious and once where potential was very nearly realised. Their recent support slots with Brownbear and Indigo Velvet probably best illustrate the increasing stock of this band, and their latest release seems to have been a goal that they’ve been working towards gradually from the beginning.
The single opens up with one of many catchy riffs that guide the song from verse to chorus and back again; an expansive and kinetic guitar driven intro which sets up exactly what the song is about to provide. After this the energy drops down to reveal Chris’ voice, delicate and honest over a bouncing bass line that propels the quieter moments in the tune. The highlight of the track for me is the guitar riff that throws itself into a palm muted moment of intricacy before bursting into the admittedly less elaborate but equally infectious chorus that you will find yourself singing all day. This is a chorus that will surely kill in a live setting, and will definitely be a gem in the set list for the band. More like this will keep fans of Vistas, Indigo Velvet and Blossoms satisfied and hungry for gigs to bounce along to.
You’ll be able to catch the band in Leith Depot, Edinburgh on Friday 24th May. Tickets and more information available here.
