SINGLE REVIEW | 100 Fables - History

Back in the 60s, The Beatles told us to ‘take a sad song and make it better’. This is exactly what 100 Fables' latest single ‘History’ (released Friday July 12th) does - it takes a situation which would otherwise be sad and re-models it into a catchy, synth-fuelled pop anthem, which will erase any thoughts of texting your ex because your arms will probably be in the air waving a lighter (or a phone torch, for those of us who don’t smoke).

Fresh from Glasgow, ’new wave pop’ quartet 100 Fables release History following a rather successful 2019 - and having only just passed the halfway mark of the year, the release of this single and string of upcoming festival appearances only assures us that this band are showing no signs of slowing down.

The track, which has the potential to become one of those 'moving on’ anthems (see lyric: ’thanks for being the catalyst that made me start believing’), begins with a minimalistic yet instantly recognisable plucky guitar opening. Throw the gradual entrances of the vocals and other instruments into the mix throughout the verse and they combine to build us up to an explosive chorus, where energetic frontwoman Lyndsey’s bold vocals take centre stage. The bridge is ominously empowering and the post-chorus riff repeated throughout is playful and flamboyant in the best way, guaranteed to become that ear-worm in your head as you go about your daily business.

The song is accompanied by a stylish, contemporary albeit messy (quite literally) video, which reflects the song through a number of smart rewinding sequences. Fans will appreciate the sign reading ‘we are electric girls and boys’ in the background shots of the band playing - a subtle nod to Fables’ 2017 song and EP of the same name.

If you’ve been enlightened as to the exciting journey 100 Fables are currently embarking on and wish to join them on it, you can next catch them playing Edinburgh's Stramash on August 24th as part of Live At The Fringe. In September, they return to Ayrshire to play Live @ Troon. Get involved!
