Hailing from Kirkcaldy, Shambolics are undoubtedly one of Fife’s hottest and zealously supported musical prospects at the minute. The band describe themselves as a “dreamy rock ‘n roll” band based around 60’s psychedelia, 70’s harmonies, 80’s clean guitar chimes and 90’s melodic anthems. For me, all of the above influences mentioned are more than appropriate to describe the sound of Shambolics music as they can all be coherently heard throughout their current back catalogue of tracks such as “Chasing a Disaster” and “When She Goes Home” which has reached a very impressive 170k streams on Spotify to date. Having been awarded ‘Best Rock/Alt Act’ at last year’s Scottish Alternative Music Awards and supported immensely by the likes of Fred Perry Subculture, Radio X and This Feeling, it’s fair to say the title of their latest single “My Time is Now” provides an apt portrayal of Shambolics current stature and future possibilities going into 2019. Coinciding with the band’s biggest headline show to date in their homeland of Fife at the 700 capacity Lourenzos, Dunfermline, their latest single is certain to cause irrefutable carnage and joy among their loyal fans on the night of the gig. To add, the band have gained a solid reputation for delivering raw, raucous, energetic performances which only further implies where you should be on December 1st if you’re interested in new, upcoming Scottish music (click here for ticket link for Lourenzo’s - Dec 1st).
Featuring a combination of melodic and distorted guitar riffs along with heaps of well-blended harmonies, “My Time Is Now” is a track that blasts energy and excitement from all angles to anthemic proportions. Working with Liverpool based producer, Al Groves (Cast, Louis Berry, Michael Kiwanuka) at The Motor Museum recording studios which has recently catapulted the careers of the likes of Jake Bugg and The 1975, Shambolics are clearly pulling out all the stops they can to best capture the sound they are producing at the moment – and it shows.
Although the vocals may be slightly overpowered by the distorted guitar at points in the first verse, this does not tarnish the laudable, noticeably professional production effort as a whole throughout the track. A wealth of studio implemented effects and harmonies neatly intertwine with a lively bass and drum performance throughout to produce a track that is boisterous, uplifting and unquestionably catchy which is sure to become a new firm favourite among the Shams’ rowdy, faithful supporters.
Though notably this is the band’s heaviest release to date, it does not fail to capture the earlier mentioned blend of unique influences that they have become synonymous with in their music. With a distorted guitar and its use of a Wah-Wah pedal harking back to 60’s psychedelic influences such as Cream; an abundance of 70’s inspired neat and concise harmonies providing depth and texture throughout; a Johnny Marr-esque jangly, clean guitar chime providing a dreamy backbone to the track and a catchy, 90’s infused anthemic chorus, “My Time Is Now” really offers something new with every listen.
