What’s better than a spur of the moment last minute gig plagued with new bands at an un-visited venue? That’s right nothing. But that was what was on the cards tonight. It was Sean’s Launch of his new EP “The Unplugged EP” with support from 3 local bands, Connor Liam Byrne, Midnight Alley’s and Boyz who Bruise.

First up was a new musician to me, Connor Liam Byrne. Connor came onto the stage with great confidence and a unique sense of style. Playing impressive thought-provoking sounds that was setting everyone up for a great night of live music. With a crowd that was quite impressive in its numbers given it being the first set off the night. Connor flowed flawlessly through the set with some moments to stop and have banter with the crowd about various things. In all an impressive set from the 20-year-old and an exciting prospect for the Dundee music scene as a whole, will hopefully catch him in the near future rocking away.

Next up was a band I’d seen before but in a different form and with a new name, Midnight Alleys (Formally Neil Morrison Band). It was all you would expect from the lads to be honest, with the addition of a tambourine, great tunes that had even the most stubborn of music fans tapping along to their tunes. Even with the introduction of a minor glitch that saw the bass drum attempt the great escape, the lads continued like professionals with jumpy bass lines and enveloping guitar solos they did put on a show. From a band that we’ve seen go through quite a few changes within the passed year it was great seeing it all come together completely and find their own unique take on the indie/rock genre.

The penultimate band were another new band to me Boyz who Bruise. I really feel like I’m over using this word but they were really unique, the addition of a saxophone to a local band was a breath of fresh-air and something you don’t really see in the indie scene these days. Unfortunately, they are without much music exposure on typical streaming sites such as Spotify and Apple Music, however you can check out their melodic tunes over on Soundcloud. Their harmonies such as in their tune “How Does Your Garden Grow?” is bested by no one I’ve ever seen in the local scene. In all it was a really impressive set by the new boyz on the scene and is exciting to see the direction in which they can take the scene in.

Finally, it was time for the headliner Sean Findlay, accompanied by a full band, which was a great new take on the usual acoustic set we have come accustomed to with Sean. Joined by the first artist of the night Connor Liam Byrne on drums as well as the very talented Jamie Wild, lead guitarist for ‘The Roques’. It was a brilliant set by Sean with plenty of tunes that had everyone bopping along to his tunes. You can really hear the passion in his singing as well as his song-writing, using his own life experiences to influence his tunes, it really is a brilliant spectacle to witness this in person. He played all the way through his music catalogue stopping for a wee Sean Findlay trademark tune with even enough time to belt out an encore. It was a great set from the 21 year old and a stellar first EP Launch which shows great promise for the future.
