Having been invited to this gig months ago, I had been really looking forward to seeing the lads do their first headline gig. For those who are regular readers of my Discovery Music gig reviews, you would be beginning to think I was obsessed with the band by the amount of times that I have seen them recently and to tell you the truth you wouldn't be wrong. The rise from being total strangers meeting each other for the first time at Good Times Music Studios through the bands manager Paula to being one of, if not the, best bands in Dundee has been a brilliant story to follow.
Having been at an other gig before heading to Beat Gen, I had unfortunately missed seeing two of the warm up bands, although I had seen both Ruvella's and The Medina's recently so I know how good both bands are. I was still gutted to miss out on another live viewing. By all accounts though I have heard that both bands gave very good performances.
By the time I got a drink from the bar to try and deal with the incredibly hot and stuffy conditions that Beat Gen is known for, The Capollo's were setting up. Now I have to admit I hadn't heard of these guys before and I was too lazy to look them up prior to the gig. However what a treat they were. The 4 piece Aberdonians were the prefect main support. A set full of energy and catchy guitar riffs they got the crowd buzzing for the main event. A clever addition to their set was a cover of Courteeners song "Not Nineteen Forever" This went down a treat. I really hope to catch these guys at a gig in the future and would highly recommend people went along to see them as well.
Then it was time for the main event. A near sell out crowd waited for Saint Louie to set up on stage and start. The crowd was buzzing and the atmosphere was electric. From the first beat of the first song "My North Star" the place was jumping, mosh circles included. Not bad going for a band that has only played a handful of gigs and has no music on any streaming sites such as Spotify. As gig performances go it was top quality. They rattled through their set list with ease and every song got better and better. They finished the gig with their new song that they have not long written, the punky sounding tune "Fuck Your Tie" was exactly that- punk. A great song to finish on which only left you wanting more. This was by far their best performance I had seen them do. As they continue to go from strength to strength time will only tell how far they can go but in my opinion anything is possible. If you haven't seen them live yet then you are in for a real treat.
