The Savage Sound System is a collective of musicians, artists, singers, rappers and more who collaborate with other artists worldwide.
Werd is an MC who has been around the Scottish scene for a few years, performing, recording and collaborating. He runs Sons of Scotland (label) and The Hip Hop House (live night at Sketchy Beats in Leith) among other projects.
Sacre Noir - known as both a solo singer and performing with the band centred around her, she has collaborated with electronic and hip-hop artists including MOG, Conscious Route, Werd'n'Deeko, Riddlah, Madhat McGore, XiangXing to name a few.
Released just a few weeks ago, their latest collaborative effort is short and succinct with the story it tells.
Starting with some waning synths, “yo, here’s a wee story” from Werd gives you a heads up that some rhymes are about to be dropped if you didn’t already know. Some minimalist drums and deep bass keep pace with each syllable of the lyrics.
The story is what most of us in Scotland have experienced in our younger teenage years, either ourselves or looking on at others who have. Prowling the streets, mostly through boredom or wanting to keep out of issues within the family home, looking for a bit of excitement by any means necessary. Fighting, winchin, drinkin or smokin...or of course a mixture of the aforementioned.
Sacre Noir lends her vocal talent to the chorus, her smooth voice and higher register offering a contrast to the darker rhymes of Werd.
“I never wanted to walk in your shoes”
The final verse sees the topic shift to celebrity culture, the effect it has on the psyche to the point of medication. How this can lead to isolation and in general, not particularly happy lives.
For a short song (2m17s) it hits hard to those who have experienced or witnessed these issues, and whilst I possibly couldn’t call it catchy, it is certainly compelling.
No mess lyrics with the darker side of Scottish culture.
