After a month of anticipation, the night was finally here, Rascalton were in Dundee to kick off their Scottish tour. Accompanied by their Glaswegian counterparts Heavy Rapids and supported by local bands The Roques and Saint Louie, the line up was certainly one to be admired.
First to take to the stage were The Roques, those of you that are avid readers of Discovery Music will have seen us review a multitude of content regarding The Roques and know that we’re big fans of their sound. As ever they did not disappoint playing a plethora of songs from their track list such as “What do you see?” and “Fear Me” as well as a captivating cover of Brian Jonestown Massacre’s song “Anemone”. It seems every time I have seen The Roques they have gone from strength to strength through stage presence right through to sound it is certainly exciting to see what the future is going to be for this band. Disappointingly missing out their debut single “Day by Day” which has also been removed from Apple Music and Spotify but hopefully not for too long!
The Roques
The second band to perform were one of my personal favourites on the local music scene Saint-Louie. Fresh off the back of a mini England tour the lads were certainly not fatigued at all bursting out of the starting blocks with “Silver Spoon” from their debut Double-A side “Silver Spoon/Devil Inside”. Showcasing their wealth of sound and performance they certainly had the minimalistic crowd going. Again, a band who is no stranger to Discovery Music but always seem to impress us and are generally just great to see perform. I was glad to finally see their new bassist Ian take to the stage and fit into the band like they’ve been playing together for years. The superb vocals from Owen matched by Ryan’s impressive guitar solos is always a pleasure to witness.
Saint-Louie
The penultimate band were Heavy Rapids, the four-piece punk/rock band hailing from Glasgow were certainly a breath of fresh air and their performance was something unlike anything I’d seen live. With their energetic stage presence and heavy punk tunes it kind of took me by surprise. It really wasn’t what I was expecting from the lads after talking to them earlier, but I was very impressed. I must admit just like the headline band Rascalton I hadn’t really listened to Heavy Rapids, but they have certainly found a fan in me now and I will be keeping my eyes and ears out for their future musical endeavours.
Heavy Rapids
Last and certainly no means least were the headliners, Rascalton! Taking to the stage to not the biggest of crowds I had ever seen in Beat Generator, but they weren’t about to let that phase them. Playing to hardened gig and live music lovers it felt like somewhat of an intimate gig. Playing class tunes such as “Police” and “Told you so” they had me loving every note and were downloaded by the time I’d made it home. The future is certainly bright for the lads and I’m intrigued to see what the future holds for Rascalton and what route they will take.
Rascalton
Despite the crowd it was one of the greatest gigs I’ve been to and that is no exaggeration, every band put in 100% and have my upmost respect. The crowd, or lack of, in no way represented the music and performance on show and left me somewhat frustrated.
