Following up on their 2017 EP “Save Me Now”, the Ranzas return with atmospheric new single “One You Miss”.
Taking influence from several decades of rock and roll and swiftly combining them to form their own, fresh sound, the Ranzas seek to bring catchy, guitar laden anthems back to the forefront of the public eye once again, and singles such as this will certainly help them on their way.
Boasting Murray Brough’s distinct, catchy bassline and a roaring chorus led by Connor Adam’s streaking guitar, “One You Miss” worms its way into your conscious and subconscious minds even after the first listen, and as a standout single is a fantastic way to get to know this band.
Whilst it may initially seem to lack the punch and power that were present on “Save Me Now”, “One You Miss” provides us with a view to a different side of the Ranzas; a more emotional and heartfelt aspect of a brazen, rock and roll band. We get an inkling of this from the moody sound of the opening bass riff, and the first line lays out a scene of solitude and heartbreak “Standing alone in the kitchen/looking outside to the black sky”, singer Lyle Kennedy croons over someone close who has passed away.
One impressive thing about the Ranzas is how none of their instruments overpower each other, all having their own moments to shine and not being drowned out, allowing each musician to showcase their obvious talent in turn. However, it never feels like this is done purely to show off, but
rather that the strength of their songwriting lets each member of the band express themself and their skills within the confines of the overall song, all coming together to form one cohesive sound without any one aspect sticking out too much or blending in to the background. This ability to be a group of talented individuals working so closely together and doing it so well sets the Ranzas in very good stead for the future.
The second half of the song then breaks into a new realm via Julie Dunabie’s driving kick drum, as we head toward a searing instrumental which takes up breakneck speed and allows us to indulge ourselves in Adam’s guitar skills, which he showcases in an outstanding solo.
All of this adds up to a gorgeously dark sound, one to sing your heart out and then jump around your bedroom to, ensuring “One You Miss” is one you don’t want to miss.
