So excited to be writing about going to this gig! The KT playlist is currently getting me through this 2 day hangover. KT Tunstall will be returning home to play at The Liquid Room, Edinburgh on Friday the 28th of September and I can already feel myself starting to fan-girl.
There are so many reasons to love KT Tunstall and spend your time and money on this gig for someone who you all probably only acknowledge for the beginning of film 'The Devil Wears Prada' and the 'woo hoo' song. Here's a few:
She's from Fife.
She has done something very difficult and rare in 2018's disposable music industry which is make a long lasting career. Having first broke onto the scene on The Jool's Holland Show in 2004, she can still sell well into the millions of records and bring in a full crowd to a gig all over the world.
However the most significant reason to get your arse down to The Liquid Room on the 28th is because of her music which is so overlooked once you get past her mainstream hits like 'Black Horse and The Cherry Tree', 'Another Place to Fall' and 'Suddenly I see' (still really fucking good songs). Her later albums such as Invisible Empire, Drastic Fantastic and KIN are full of wee hidden gem songs such as 'Maybe It's a Good Thing', 'Feel It All, 'Beauty of Uncertainty' and many more. Across all her albums it's refreshing to hear someone write about more than the usual topics of greeting over a boy and instead she writes about her perception of day to day occurrences and characters. A song I really hope features on her Edinburgh set list is 'If Only', one of my all time favourite songs.
It has such simple yet melodic vocals and a strumming pattern on the recording which for the fucking life of me I canny figure out.
It's no just me who thinks it's amazing, KT once collaborated with Daryl Hall on a cover of the song with a full band.
Her ability to write and play rhythmic guitar in the way she does is something I can't wait to see live. I have watched videos on youtube from previous gigs where you can see her build up a song layer by layer with her loop pedal right from scratch which proves this point. It's amazing to watch such simplistic beats, rhythms and strumming patterns build up a much more complex sound.
One to watch is this version of 'Black Horse and The Cherry Tree' with an unexpected cover.
Another reason to get a try get a last minute ticket if you see one go up for sale is the release of her new music! Single 'The River' has just been released as I wrote this and the new album 'WAX' comes out on the 5th of October.
I could rant and rave more about how fascinating her musical technique and writing skills are as an artist are but I better save something for the gig review. Tickets for her Edinburgh appearance are sold out so if you couldn't get your hands on some or couldn't make it be sure to watch the Discovery Music social pages for all the coverage of KT's performance you could need.

WEE GEM: Another video to add to the watch list is KT Tunstall's cover of 80's classic 'Don't You Forget About Me'.
