Apologies to our readers that this review is over a week after the event but it has been a busy few days at Discovery Music headquarters.
First up to the stage to kick off the night of live local music was Ryan Horne accompanied by Jamie Wilde, guitarist for The Roques and also one of our writers, for most of his set. This was a typical Ryan Horne performance - full of passion and enjoying himself whilst on the big stage.
Having followed Ryan from the start of his solo career, it has been great to watch his live performances go from strength to strength and the confidence grow with each gig. With the addition of Jamie playing lead guitar to accompany Ryan's acoustic rhythm guitar playing, this has added a new and dynamic sound to his performances.
The only down side of this performance was, and through no fault of their own, the sound levels of Jamie's guitar. The sound engineer had the sound far too loud at the start then far too quiet at the end. Although this didn't effect the performance too much, it was the only negative on another top effort from the duo.
Next to take to the stage were The Medinas. We have covered them quite a lot recently here on Discovery Music as we caught their set at the fantastic Belladrum festival. They had a big crowd with them for their set and the crowd really got involved with it. It's great to see a band feed off the energy of a crowd and also to see a band enjoy themselves. They are another band we have been able to follow and watch go from strength to strength. This was arguably one of the best performances I have sen from the The Medinas. Despite their young age, this was a very mature performance from the band.
The final support act of the night came from 5 piece band Plasmas. Although relatively new to the Dundee music scene, they are quickly building up a name for themselves and amassing a loyal band of followers which continues to grow with each gig.
Although there are quite a few bands in Dundee, there is something about Plasmas that makes them stand out and be unique. It's always a pleasure to see these guys play, and this was no different. Despite the blistering heat inside Beat Generator, the band managed to not melt and delivered a very polished performance. This set included the massively popular song Overblown, which is a real crowd-pleaser. If you haven't seen these guys yet then I would highly recommend it!
Finally it was time for the main event. As the near capacity crowd waited in anticipation for the headliners to come on stage, the heat in the room was getting near unbearable. Although this was all forgotten about as the band appeared on stage. This was the first time they had headlined a gig but you couldn't tell as this was the best they had sounded in all the time I have seen them.
Like the other acts, we have followed them from the start and it's a joy to watch them flourish. The highlight of the set for me was their rendition of Sit Down By James - this led to a mass sing along with the crowd which seem to really give the band a boost and had the place buzzing. They fired through their set list, including the massively popular tune Plastic Rose which can be seen here as we recorded it. Overall their performance was brilliant and they fully deserved the big crowd that came to see them. Well done lads! Another great night of local music which had the support of Dundee which was great to see. It shows that if the music is good enough people will come out for it.
