Dreamy pop rock at its best. I think that is the only fair way to summarise the upcoming Neon Waves single “A Wish to be Seen”.
Beneath its chilled-out surface, however, is a dark, stomping beast of a tune cleverly cloaked by the crooning vocal melody and the heavily reverberated guitars. The opening, haunted house esque sounds give us an inkling into the darker aspect of the song, and the drums build on this in the verse, taking the form of a powerful stomp and pushing the dreamy melodies forward. My personal favourite part is after the second verse, when the true power of the song is fully realised with a more intense, purposeful guitar riff that acts as a nice bridge.
However, that’s not to say that the lighter parts of the song are not impressive in their own right; the verses will almost certainly have you either tapping your foot or swaying along, eyes closed and just lost in the blissful dreaminess of Neon Waves’ brilliance. The main guitar riff, playing before each verse, is deliciously simple and deceptively catchy, which is the main aim of song writing is it not? People will have different views on this, but Neon Waves certainly tick this box and allow us a four minute tour of their world of writing songs, and what an enjoyable tour it is.
To go along with this release, Neon Waves have treated us to a music video, bathing the band in alternating colours, light and dark, which seems apt given the equally light and dark feelings this song provokes. Alongside previous releases such as “Version Of” and “Liar’s Promise”, Neon Waves are quickly building a seriously impressive catalogue of tunes, ones which when played at a gig with the whole crowd singing along would surely make for an unforgettable experience.
