The second year of Neighbourhood Weekender (NHWD) festival in Warrington is taking place this bank holiday weekend if it’s half as good as it was last year – I’m in for a treat!
It sounds bizarre but I actually bought the tickets before this year’s line up was revealed. I had such a great experience last year that regardless of who would be announced I knew that this festival would have to be a yearly occurrence for me.
It’s such a well-organised layout with three stages: The Main Stage, Stage 2 and the Viola Beach stage– a great tribute to the English Indie band who sadly passed away a few years prior. The stage mainly focuses on new and upcoming bands – the perfect way to discover some new music!
Despite not being the biggest George Ezra fan who is this year’s Saturday Headliner, the rest of the line up shows great potential with the likes of Richard Ashcroft, Gerry Cinnamon, The Charlatans and Primal Scream all taking to the stage this weekend.
I’m not much of a planner when it comes to Festivals – I obviously have bands in mind that I want to see but I’m happy wandering around different tents and stages seeing as many bands and discovering as much music as possible.
Last year at the festival I discovered English rock band, Yonaka and Scottish sensation, Lewis Capaldi who believe it or not after selling out the Hydro and Wembley arena twice this year performed in front of a very small crowd last year.
It just goes to show the organisers of NHWD have a special talent for picking musicians/ bands with potential. I can’t wait to see who I’ll discover this year!
Here’s a quick preview of some of the Scottish bands I hope to see …
Primal Scream
Scottish eighties band, Primal Scream are one of my all-time favourites and as soon as I heard they were playing NHWD I knew they would be a definite. Last time I seen them perform, they were supporting Stone Roses at Hampden and what a gig it was.
Their album, ‘Screamadelica’ is one of the greats including some of the best feel-good songs out there – perfect festival music! Can you imagine listening to ‘Movin’ On Up’ or ‘Loaded’ in a crowd full of music lovers, drinking lots of beer… there’ll be no feeling like it!
Gerry Cinnamon
Scottish indie folk singer songwriter, Gerry Cinnamon performed on Stage 2 last year and was by far my highlight of the weekend! This year, he’ll be taking on the main stage and if there’s one guy and a guitar that can get an entire crowd hyped up – it’s Gerry Cinnamon.
This will be my third time seeing him in the space of a year and every performance just gets better and better. I love how big he’s gotten over the last few years out with Scotland. His sets are just one big massive singalong - exactly what you are wanting at a festival!
Vida
Vida are a new upcoming indie band from Scottish town, Alloa with influences from Oasis, Stone Roses and The View. I actually haven’t had the chance to see them live yet so they’re definitely top of my list to see! They have a very easy-listening sort of vibe which I think will attract a good crowd. I’ve heard a lot of great things about Vida so i'm looking forward to seeing their set this weekend!
The Snuts
The Snuts are one of my favourite Scottish bands at the moment after seeing their set at TRNSMT Festival last year. They certainly have a huge following and know exactly how to get the crowd going. I think it will be really special hearing their single, ‘Glasgow’ away from home – there’s something about seeing a Scottish band outside of Scotland. It can be a totally different atmosphere but one I’m looking forward too!
Their latest single, ‘All Your Friends’ was released today - just in time to debut it at Neighbourhood Weekender this year (Hopefully)! Although, they’re only doing a short set – I think they’ll definitely be one of my highlights of the weekend!
Of course, it won’t just be Scottish Acts I’ll be focusing on this weekend – I’m also really looking forward to Maximo Park, The Twang, The Blinders and Sea Girls alongside many more! Stay tuned for my review next week!
