Living in a Movie - The 101

Updated: Jun 6, 2018

Five seconds. Take it as a trailer – a sneak-peek – with all of the gut-twisting potential, minus the spoils of plot and development. That’s all it takes to be drawn into the song. Five seconds; with the treble-edged stabs of notes, clear-cut and glimmering, lifted by the hum of anticipation and the roll of a drum, the song begins.

Within life’s menial machine lies bouts of boredom, the strive for perfect imperfection, and wanting to break free from our own glass ceiling – this song is like the soundtrack to a daydream, and one that is had much too often. So, what’s the cure for boredom? According to this song, it’s adventure, excitement, vulnerability, freedom, expression. Quite simply put, yet often forgotten.

“I want to be somewhere far away... We’ll go somewhere we can finally stay”

In another angle, “Living in a Movie” can be seen as an account of the band’s own musical journey; setting out to be a musician, experiencing the trials of a creator and performer, discovering the camaraderie in artistry, and longing to play their music that people can enjoy.

This song would be a seamless fit for a music video – the way that dynamics are tastefully placed, gaps in the vocals leaving room for the imagination to take over, and the grand sound of the chorus all comes together as a polished product (plus, the title itself has the potential to explore interpretations of ‘living in a movie’). It would be a shame to not make use of that title, but the song alone is a perfect choice for summer listening.

The 101 draws from us humble beings a sense of intrigue with their musical works. However little it may be, with only three songs released, The 101 has – at this moment – over 250,000 plays on Spotify alone, and has received industry recognition from the BBC, CLASH! Magazine, and NME, among others. Listen to the artwork, look at the music and you'll see there is a distinctly dramatic flair weaved into their creations, developing through certain nuances of nostalgia matched with melancholy monikers. Another instalment to what seems to be their blue period, “Living in a Movie” is a telling of escapism from mundane reality into dreams of revelry and aspiration.

The band now prepare for the festival season, with dates to be announced, so…
