A rejuvenated, full of life Kyle Falconer is set to embark upon his first solo tour across the country with the release of his insightful debut album, ‘No Thank You’. Coming off the back of various recent in-store sessions across the country to help promote his debut album, Falconer is set to take to the stage with his band which, judging by the standards of some of The View’s gigs in the past, should be lively, buoyant and full of passion and emotion. ‘No Thank You’, already achieving critical acclaim from the likes of NME, The Herald and The Independent, reveals deeply personal struggles alongside positive hopes and aspirations present in Falconer’s past, present and future with tracks such as ‘Poor Me’, ‘The Theapist’ and ‘Family Tree’ being stand out songs that capture the album’s overall message. Hailing from Dundee himself, you may think what better way to start off a tour than with a hometown gig? This happens to be the outcome which is sure to be of delight to his local audience who will of course remember Falconer fondly from his time as front-man with Dundee band The View. Keeping with the local spirit, Falconer’s support bill for his gig at Church, Ward Road, features all local acts Billy Mitchell, Thi3ves and Echo Machine which again highlights the resurgence in local music making a real positive impact in the city.
First to perform on the night will be Billy Mitchell who I have personally watched perform several times in the past featuring on The View’s support bills across the country. Mitchell is set to open the night with passion, energy and character as he so often does. With a host of performances
alongside big names such as Jake Bugg already in line later this year to help promote his latest single ‘Psycho’, Mitchell’s melodic indie sound inspired by the likes of The Beatles is imminently poised to earn him even more admirers of his work across the country. Be sure to get down early to catch Mitchell perform on 2nd August – he will not disappoint.
New up and coming Dundee band th13ves featuring Kyle Falconer’s brother Ronnie, are undeniably making quick work in creating a name for themselves. Their latest single ‘Dreamers’, which according to Mockit Music “hooks you straight in and has you singing the chorus within a single listen”, has already been selected as Amazing Radio’s track of the day by Jim Gellatly and helped to earn the band a spot at the upcoming EH6 Festival in Leith alongside the likes of Kyle Falconer (coincidentally) and The Coral. What’s even more impressive of th13ves is that, believe it or not, they have managed to achieve these feats without having played a gig so far. Surely then, with their debut gig coming this Thursday night alongside some of the best local talent Dundee is producing at the moment, this provides the band a startlingly great opportunity to kick off their journey as a band with a bang and really show their local audience what they’re all about.
Echo Machine, consisting of ex-bandmates of now defunct band The Mirror Trap, are also a relatively new group rapidly making a name for themselves among the local music scene. Their
recent debut gig at Conroy’s Basement was reviewed by The Skinny as, “a gender-bending display of futuristic sounds, testing the limits of what can be achieved with the right gear and a very receptive audience”. Echo Machine’s released tracks to date, ‘St. Elmo’ and ‘Vibrations’, both certainly stand by this statement displaying a unique new wave pop sound that adds further vibrancy and variety to the already thriving local music scene. Be sure to expect a bold, vibrant and pleasingly diverse performance from the group this Thursday night featuring on the bill as main support.
