Alt country rockers Gunnison erupt onto the scene with a tasty slice of Americana. Bursting forth out of West Lothian with gorgeously rich melodies and a heart full of desire. Their debut single Walk West is a skillful blend of catchy guitar hooks, enchanting vocals and laid back grooves.
The songs mood is perfectly established by a powerful guitar riff that's drenched in emotion. It has a truly uplifting quality that's so emphatically rousing it reminds me of Big Country. The vocals then take center stage, beautifully controlled with a feeling of pure passion. The singer really drives home every word, pulling at your heartstrings and making you want to reach out and hug a stranger. The guitars expertly weave around the vocals providing a lush and spacious soundscape. The dynamic shifts are pleasing to the ear and really help to amplify the songs message of romantic entanglement.
The song ebbs and flows its way to a triumphant guitar solo. A solo that J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr would be thrilled with. The notes cascade from the fretboard and wash into the vocals as the song gently fades out.
Walk West is a solid debut from a band with a great sound and flair for melody. I look forward to hearing more from them in the near future.
