Who’s Olivia? released their brand new single, “She” on the 6th of September 2019 and to celebrate had a single launch at Audio Glasgow with support from Tacado & Daryl Speirs. I had the pleasure of attending the launch and seeing this amazing new band preform live.
So Who’s Olivia? Nobody knows, an on-going joke the band has with their fans which they took to new heights at the launch as they handed out name stickers to everybody that said “hello my names Olivia” so for one night only everybody was Olivia.
They performed a few new songs including “To My Lover” (which had a very different feel to all the other songs they played that night - maybe a little more synthesised) and a few songs the crowd knew like “Since September” and “Olivia” the song in which the band got there name from because everybody would ask who’s Olivia?
The band looked and sounded very comfortable up on the stage and had good banter when they were not playing, they interacted with the crowd very well which I think is important in smaller venues like Audio.
“She” was the last song of the night and the one that everybody had been waiting for, the band were nearly ready to play their new single as they prepared their instruments you could feel the support from the crowd eager to hear this powerful new single live. From the first strum of the guitar you melt into the song then you get hit with the mesmerising vocals of Colette McLaughlin enchanting the whole crowd as we all swayed along to the soft dreamy pop vibe the band was giving off. The lyrics match the melody of the song with lyrics like “her lipstick smudged across where she used to feel pretty” and “it’s too much emotion” it’s a song you can feel the emotion in the air and the band portrays it across so well and with every harmonised cry that the band let out you get more invested into the song. The band uses synthesised sound to give the song depth and the indie pop feeling that the rest of the songs that night had, it actually helped pick out the other instruments in the song and gives the vocals more echo. The song seems to be leading up to something when the drums pick up and the dreamy vocals turn a bit more rocky but it only lasts for what seems like a few second and everything goes back to being peaceful which was a great way to drag the audience and me back into the song for the intoxicating ending.
Since the concert I have added this song to my daily playlist and once you have had a listen I think you will to. If you’re a fan of Wolf Alice, Lana Del Ray or Pale Waves you might want to keep an eye out for new music from this band because if its anything like “She” you’ll love it.
