Edinburgh band 'Whitehill Grove' returned home to play The Voodoo Rooms on Friday just passed following recent gigs in Manchester and Glasgow. This was a long awaited gig for me to see them live for the first time but 100% worth the wait in the end.
My best pal may be their manager or as they called her 'advisor/ faff - abouter' but I'm skeptical when it comes to local indie/rock bands for following the same sound, and can be a total gobshite so this is NOT bias. It was a fucking quality gig.
I didn't catch the names of the 2 support acts but maybe for the best as while I really enjoyed one of them, the other almost sent me home. However going home would of been a big mistake as I would of missed Whitehill Grove's performance. The set featured both older songs of theirs such as 'Get to Know You' and some of their new, soon to be released music such as 'Volta' and 'Take Off' (keep your eyes peeled for these). The combination of both held a class atmosphere throughout.
Callum lead on vocals which can only be done true justice live - totally blown away, with backing vocal support from a surprisingly high pitched Danny. The combination of their vocal was something really nice to hear live as it's not as apparent in their recordings. And what indie/rock band would be complete without some guy pure shredding it on drums - enter Ethan. Supported by Seth's questionable hip dancing but that seems to be a reoccurring bass player thing. All 4 boys held together a strong energy which passed on through the crowd and back, specifically when some of them jumped on stage.
[ Even named and shamed them for you. ]
Highlight no.1 of the gig would be when they treated us to a wee musical number featuring verses from Dizzee Rascal's 'Bonkers' and Kanye West's 'Black Skinhead - wee bit different. The second would be one of the last songs they played :'Indiana', a song totally different to anything they had played all night and quite different to what is being produced around Edinburgh right now. As far as I am aware it is not being released anytime soon but is played live so just another reason to go see them.
Overall a great gig and the talk from other local bands around Edinburgh who recommended them to me is true, they are worth going to see. Keep and eye on their social media for more gigs and new releases.
COMING SOON: I also had the chance to interview Whitehill Grove before the gig which will be posted here on Discovery Music in the next few days.
