GIG REVIEW | THIS FEELING @ BROADCAST | 27/09/2019

Updated: Oct 9, 2019

It's always a great line up when This Feeling get involved. Last week, Chelsea and Gregor headed to Broadcast, Glasgow to see The Reason, The Stoned Immaculate, Only Shadows and Slouch - here's what they had to a say about the night ....

The Reason

Words by Chelsea

After premiering their latest single, ‘Never Let Me Down’ I couldn’t wait to see the Airdrie indie four-piece live. For a band that’s relatively new to the Scottish music scene, they are smashing it!

The band create this exciting energy on stage whilst performing which reels the crowd in. One of the songs that stuck out to me was ‘Mango’.

A song influenced about a date in Sauchiehall Street’s tropical bar, Mango – a place I’m sure we’ve all had a few weekday cocktails in! It’s the type of song that as soon as you hear it, you’ll love it. An easy-listening vibe taking you back to those summer day memories.

The song suggested influence from bands such as Two Door Cinema Club and Viola Beach… that indie pop feel good vibe.

Nevertheless, I had been waiting weeks to hear their latest single, Never Let Me Down live and what a finale it was. Now since we premiered the song on DM, I’ve had it on the repeat, if it’s not catchy guitar riff that zooms you or then it’s the brilliant use of brilliantly honest lyrics.

'I want you to know, never let me down. I want you to see, where you wanna go.’

It’s a song that relates well for people in relationships/ seeing someone / dating or whatever you call it nowadays and how a statement so simple as ‘Never Let Me Down’ can still cause complexity within couples of our generation.

The song focuses on the excitement and passion of meeting that one person for the first time and looking forward to seeing what the future holds. Something I’m sure we can all relate to… I always say if you can get your listeners to relate to a song then that’s half the battle.

People listen to music to get help them escape problems and a song like ‘Never Let Me Down’ can totally take people back to those happier times which in my opinion is extremely talented song-writing.

As I’d listened to the song so many times on repeat leading up to the gig, I was scared seeing it live wouldn’t be the same. Of course it wasn’t … it was even better. Seeing a song that totally has an impact on you live is one of the world’s greatest feelings and The Reason really achieved that for me.

Towards the end, both the lead singer and guitarist jumped off stage and performed the last part of the song in the crowd which was the perfect way to end a strong set.

The Stoned Immaculate

Words by Gregor

Next up was the stoned immaculate. A band who have been on the scene for a while, they’re blend of punk and indie filled the room quickly.

Playing new track Simmer as well as ones already released, the band sure put on a show to all the dedicated fans they had brought with them.

The singer switching between guitar and no guitar, yet still maintaining the same stage presence was mesmerising.

The young Wishaw band are eager to prove themselves in a genre that at times can seem stale, and that’s always an exciting prospect.

Loud and ready to go, stoney macs as they are more commonly known in the scene, are ready to set the Scottish scene on fire.

.

Only Shadows

Words by Gregor

Only Shadows were the final band to play before the headliners. The indie giants from Northern England absolutely blew me away.

They were reminiscent of modern indie songs that I love, manipulating the crowd to jump around and dance, despite not knowing the words.

Having in between song patter is up there with what I love most about a fun gig, and this band definitely had it.

Joking with Martin of The Reason who was in the front row, the band said that if they both keep playing shows and selling tickets at the rate they are that they might sell out an arena in 30 years.

With their intricate guitar tones and crafted drums, they are a band I’d definitely keep an eye on in the future.

This live set proved that Only Shadows are going to be huge in years to come

Slouch

Words by Chelsea

This is the second time in a matter of months I’ve seen Slouch live and it was great to see the same passion, energy and charm that applied to the previous show before. If you haven’t listened to Slouch before ... you won’t have heard anything like them before, a truly unique band.

The first time I seen them, they’d just released their single, ‘In Your Mind’. The emphasis of the electronic synth mixed with a modern indie touch suggesting a small influence from English indie band, Blossoms.

Slouch have a quality of stage that comes so naturally to them. Front man, Paul excites the crowd with his distinctive dance moves and amusing manner.

‘My Shadow’ was among one of several songs that stood out to me. The song shows a more rockier sound to the band with its edgy baseline and haunting lyrics.

The song shows the variation in their sound which is so important in the music industry today. Bands need to stand out from the crowd and have a unique touch, something Slouch thrive on.

The band treated the crowd to their latest single, ‘Duplicity’ just released a few weeks prior as their final song. It’s the type of song that immediately grips the listener with its upbeat tempo and addictive drum beat. A great ending to a solid headliner set.

You can catch the Glaswegian 5 piece at ‘Revolver Presents’ in Dundee on 21st December alongside a selection of other great Scottish talent!
