A few weeks ago, indie rock and roll band, Nickajack Men put on a benefit concert in order to raise money for their debut album.

This was not only the first time attending a gig at The Hug and Pint in Glasgow but also the first time seeing Nickajack Men as a headliner! For all those have read some of my previous articles, you’ll already know my love for the band but this gig was just on a different level from what I’ve seen of them before.

The intimacy of the venue created such an authentic atmosphere and with a strong crowd support - It was really nice to see the band getting the true recognition they deserve!

If you haven’t listen to the band before, their sound can be described as a traditional rock n roll style with a hint of country rock. Think Kings of Leon meet Johnny Cash... A sound you won’t have heard in Glasgow before.

I think that’s the main reason, the Falkirk lads are one of my favourite current bands in the Scottish music scene today.

They just have this unique style that a lot of bands find difficult to grasp.

This gig was a little bit different to the previous times I’ve seen them as that night was truly focused on them and the talent within the band as whole. They are so much more than a support band and the Hug and Pint gig totally proved that.

The band treated the crowd to a few new singles that had never been performed live before which definitely showed potential... making me even more excited for their debut album to be released!

The Nickajack Men’s frontman, Lewis has immense passion which is evidently portrayed on stage. You can really feel the raw emotion in his voice when he performs. It shows the lyrics are real and that’s what live music should really be all about.

As well as new singles, the band played a full set of all their classics too. From ‘Pretty Pictures, ‘Marilyn’, 'When The Winter Comes' and ending with the incredible ‘Changed Ways’ - it was the ultimate gig for a Nickajack Man fan.

My favourite moment of the night had to be when the band performed, ‘Gordo’. Now, I’ve seen the Nickajack Men perform twice previously and they never seem to play it. So you can understand my excitement, when I heard the first few chords and instantly knew what it was!

Like every song, people take different meanings from it. For me, ‘Gordo’ is the ultimate break-up song. With the intense lyrics - ‘I don’t want your love anymore and I don’t want you knocking my door, cause all I really wanted was your love to be true... I’m taking all your love and giving it back to you’. It’s the type of song that many people can have a connection with as it’s so relatable and creates a strong atmosphere when played live.

The song has definitely had a strong hold on me over the last few months and seeing it live was just a really special moment for me. You get a sense of empowerment when listening to it - it’s like a sudden realisation that the toxic relationship you were once in is over and you can finally move on.

It’s insane how a band can write such a song that can help an individual get over/ through a break up. It truly shows the sheer talent the band have. If that’s just one song can you imagine how amazing the rest of the set was?!

I've said to before and I'll say it again - I don't get how this band aren't bigger. I just feel they are the type of band that's needed in the Scottish Music Industry and they are without a doubt one of the best live bands I've seen this year!

Get yourself down to see them at the end of August for the Indian Summer Festival at The Shed - you don't want to miss a chance to see them live!
