On the 20th of July, fresh new band The Links took to the stage for their first headline show at Dunfermline’s PJ Molloys. The band incorporate the kind of eclectic energy found with the Britpop heroes of the 90’s and were supported by bands Public Transport and A Month of Sundays.
Unfortunately, I was unable to make it for Public Transport’s set but from what I heard from some of the members of the crowd at the gig, they put on an excellent show and also incorporated some Arctic Monkeys covers into their set which was a great catalyst in gearing the crowd up for A Month of Sundays then The Links. I hope to catch the band live at some point soon and see what they have to offer for myself.
A Month of Sundays
A month of Sundays were next on the bill and were set with tambourines, maracas, the lot. This added a refreshing addition to the line up and added that extra bit of zest to their songs and their sets. Following in the footsteps of Public Transport, A month of Sundays threw some covers into the mix, one being ‘This is the One’ by The Stone Roses. With one of the members sporting a Paris Street Rebels t-shirt, it was special to see the support for other artists in the Fife area being shown on stage. The band had a good stage presence, it was confident yet relaxed, they knew how to get the crowd going and reacted to the way the crowd were. Their set had variety to it, it kept you interested with the addition of the cover songs and the extra instruments, all round a very pleasing set.
The Links
This was my first time seeing The Links, although I’d heard a buzz generating about them for a wee while now. With the members being from both sides of the Forth, it was great to see people coming over from Edinburgh to show their support for the boys. I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect from the Links as they haven’t officially released any tracks yet but they have showcased some tunes at an acoustic session at the popular Eggman Studios in Dunfermline.
By the time The Links made it to the stage, there was a considerable amount of buzz generated within the crowd as they walked on to a track they’d went to the effort of making themselves just so it was something a bit different, ‘Turn the Page’ by The Streets bellowed out the speakers with a twist of adding in Primal Scream’s ‘Loaded’ before the song phased into another hit by The Streets, ‘Has It Come to This?’.
The band came on to a roar from the crowd as they burst into tune ‘Last Line’. The song was a great opener with the crowd loving every second. The boys also played the tracks which they’d performed in their acoustic Eggman studios sessions including ‘Sunday’ which is a melodic and heartfelt tune that gripped everyone’s attention in PJ’s. They had the perfect mix of ballad type tracks and songs which spurred energetic bursts from the crowd with fans pushing and shoving each other as lead singer Alex Duncan reciprocated the energy from the crowd. it was great to see just how much the band and the crowd were being influenced by each other.
If you need any more convincing that The Links are dedicated to putting on a class show no matter what, guitarist Scott Williamson sliced his finger on his guitar and instead of halting, he ran through to the band room, where he was luckily given a guitar from one of the support acts (in exchange for his blood splattered guitar). Scott then got right back up on stage, bloody finger and all and gave the gig everything he had. Bassist Alex Christie and drummer Ross Dickson also made the stage their own and in truth the band just looked really at home on the stage together. The boys ended with tune ‘Space & Time’ which is also featured in their Eggman Studios session and made for an unreal finish to the gig.
Overall, The Links were deserving of such a class headline gig. One of the things I admire most about the band is that they’re so appreciative of their support, with their feet firmly on the ground but aiming high, this is definitely just the beginning for The Links.
For fans of Oasis, The La's, The Verve and Shambolics.
