Out-with my usual area of Dundee, we headed up the A90 to Tunnels in the Granite City to do an interview with and review Retro Video Club’s headline Aberdeen gig. This gig was the 3rd out of 6 in my December schedule and probably the one I was most excited for. With three new bands for me to experience in Vansleep, RedFaces and BlackWaters and also seeing probably my favourite band around at the moment, Retro Video Club.
First up were Vansleep, a four-piece indie/rock band who were flying the flag for local music in Aberdeen and I must say they did so very well. Bringing out a sound that gave me vibes more of an American indie band than Aberdonian/Scottish, which took me by surprise, but it was refreshing to hear a band expand beyond their “expected” sound and bring something you don’t experience much of within the local scene. Overall a solid set from the Aberdeen lads and they really opened my eyes to what kind of music scene there is in Aberdeen and what talent they have.
Next up were Blackwaters another four-piece but from the other-side of the border, Guildford, Surrey. But they were certainly taking inspiration from being in Scotland accompanied by and swigging on a bottle of Buckfast. Blasting out the starting blocks, the punk-rock outfit had the whole crowd on strings from the first tune (even those of us who had never experienced them before). With storytelling tunes such as “People Street” which draws you in to exactly what is being said to the ecstatic energy transmitted by all in the band it was a fantastic and intriguing set to witness. Its clear to see not just from “People Street” but also another one of their songs “F**k Yeah” that they not only like to tell a story but are well up for a party and just enjoying their music.
The last of the new bands and final support act of the night was Blackwaters fellow Englanders Redfaces. Following in the theme of the night this four-piece take a different route and are more of your usual indie band taking inspiration from bands such as “The Strokes” and “Kasabian”. Having said that they put across a fantastic show and performance and its easy to see why they’re making such waves in the British music scene going on to support Razorlight at the O2 in their hometown of Sheffield on the 16th. With a mix of Garage pop with indie and the always brilliant added bonus of keys Redfaces really are one to keep an eye on in 2019 having already been announced to be playing at “This Is Tomorrow” festival in Newcastle, sharing the stage with the likes of “The Vaccines” and “Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds”.
Last but by no means least was Retro Video Club as I’ve said before this was probably the most excited I’ve been for a while, going to see a band. After first catching them, at a somewhat small and intimate gig at Conroy’s Basement in Dundee from then on, I was hooked and probably within a month of that a full on “fanboy”. As they entered the stage to a rapturous applause from a packed venue it was sure to be a great one and they certainly didn’t disappoint. Kicking off their set with their latest single “3AM” the party was in full swing, with the crowd at times acting like a choir amping up the intensity and atmosphere, it really was a pleasure to be a part of. Going onto play a mixture of new and old songs they really had everyone hooked in, with the added bonus of a mash-up of the beautiful acoustic tune that is “Noir” and the DMAS song “Delete” it really was a set to remember.
Once again a gig to never be forgotten and a fantastic representation of local talent, also Aberdeen I will definitely be back!
