GIG REVIEW | Keane @ The Usher Hall 02/10/19

It has been seven years since indie rock sensations Keane were seen on tour but they are back and bolder than ever, returning to Edinburgh as part of their ‘Cause and Effect’ tour.

Opening the show with one off of the new album, ‘You’re Not Home’ represents everything Keane is about, mixing in percussion, electronics and guitar to make the ideal opening sound. Keane were immediately greeted with warmth from the crowd as the Sussex band brought with them a sense of familiarity.

The show was filled with emotion – both from the band and the crowd. Every one of us, including myself, were eager to know why this successful and long-running had not toured in over seven years. Lead singer Tom Chaplin, inbetween songs, laid it out to us every so often catching the eye of his fellow songwriter, pianist and good friend Tim Rice-Oxley. The breakdown of Rice-Oxley’s marriage was just one of the reasons the band decided to reunite and create even more brilliant music and make the ultimate Keane record.

The new tracks played from the album, including I Need Your Love and The Way I Feel, were bursting with hurt and pain, making for an emotional and intimate experience as we got to feel what Rice-Oxley must have felt during his personal experiences.

Old classics were also mixed in with the new, the crowd belting right back the words to ‘Everybody’s Changing’ and ‘Somewhere Only We Know’. It was truly a beautiful experience.

The set was lit up with neon frames and a patchwork brightly-lit dancefloor, reminding me of an old 80’s dance room. It was the perfect setting for the bands return to Scotland and I am so excited to see the band continue on with their powerful work.

You can listen to Cause and Effect here.
