A weekday gig at Saint Luke’s is always fun, especially with the line-up Ignite Scotland had to offer!
Lewis Ross
First off was the incredibly talented Lewis Ross. With his acoustic guitar, beautifully constructed lyrics and soulful voice – I can see a bright future for the young Scottish singer. I noticed he had a very similar style to current chart-topper, Lewis Capaldi – a soft vocal melody. It’s incredible how just one guy and his guitar can totally just take over the room! It’s always difficult opening a gig but Lewis managed to make the set his own, so much so, that everyone in the crowd was just totally lost in the music – a beautiful sight to witness.
Annie Booth
Next on was Edinburgh singer-songwriter Annie Booth. A young folk singer with an alternative twist. Again, it was just her and a guitar – a total natural performance that created a mesmerising affect. Annie reminds me a lot of folk singer, Laura Marling – a pure voice you could just listen to all day. My favourite song of the set had to be ‘Magic 8’ – a very chilled song creating a relaxed atmosphere within the venue. I have a feeling there will be a lot in store for Annie this year – no talent like that can go a miss especially in the Scottish music industry!
The Nickajack Men
Third on the line-up was the incredible Nickajack Men! Now, since I’ve started writing for Discovery Music, this band have quickly become one of my favourite Scottish bands. As soon as they announce a Glasgow gig – I’m there! Their sound is just so unlike any other band in the Scottish music industry and it puzzles me how they aren’t bigger. From the get-go, the band delivered yet another quality set – natural professionals! From their first song, ‘When You Fall’ to finishing with the amazing ‘Changed Ways’, I was in awe throughout the entire set. My favourite song of the night had to be, ‘Pretty Pictures’ – the ultimate feel-good song. As soon as I heard it for the first time, I knew straight away it would be a song I’d have to listen to again and again. The live performance was just insane! From the funky guitar riff to the twisty drum beat, the song takes you back in time to the rock and roll era of the 50s. A unique style that I just can’t get enough of! The whole band just has so much energy when they perform and as someone with the same passion for music as they do, it's amazing to witness! If you haven’t had the chance to check them out yet – what are you waiting for?!
Luna the Professor
Finally, it was time for the headliners, four-piece indie band, Luna The Professor (named after the guitarist cat!) to take the stage. I had only heard one song prior to the gig so I wasn’t really sure what to expect. Nevertheless, the band totally outdone themselves! They have that easy listening sound that a lot of bands strive for... Performing their single, 'You', which is now available on Spotify, was a highlight for the crowd. A catchy tune perfect for fans of the indie genre ... so good, it's already been added to my own playlist!
What I loved most about the band ,however, was just their total natural charm – four really likable guys who totally engaged with the audience, so important when performing! Listening to Luna before the gig I was a little shocked at how youthful the band were in person - If this is the high standard of quality they perform at such a young age, I’d love to see them in years to come. Definitely a band to watch out for in the future!
Overall, it’s safe to say the event was a success. I love how Ignite Scotland managed to construct a show with four acts that all have their own unique style and sound. A great mix for the crowd!
