GIG REVIEW | HEYUP @ Conroy’s Basement 28-02-19

This was my first trip to Conroy’s this year, and I was in for a treat, three new bands for me to enjoy which is a rarity these days but one I welcomed with open arms. Going into this gig totally blind, or should I say deaf, I was in the mood to feast my ears on some new sounds.

First up were Splendid Suns, the four-piece indie/rock outfit hailing from across the water really had a unique sound. Giving me a reminiscence of the late ‘Viola Beach’ through their dance like guitar riffs mixed with ‘5 seconds of summeresq’ lyrics it really had everyone in attendance bobbing along and tapping their feet. It really was a one of a kind sound but one that definitely works, this will be a band to keep an eye on to make a name for themselves in the Scottish scene.

Next up were A Month of Sundays, now it would be no insult to say they were not unique, but they sure were brilliant bringing forth the Stone Roses/Oasis vibe everyone has grown to love. Equipped with accompanying tambourine and maracas it was easy to see where they took their inspiration from however you can’t not love it. Maybe this is why their beginning to make such waves within the Scottish scene, at the time of writing this they have a gig lined up supporting Neon Waltz in Dunfermline as well as having played to famous King Tuts in Glasgow. Certainly a band I could listen to over and over again and will be.

Next up were the headliners HEYUP, a 3-piece coming out with what they describe as alternative rock, but I would probably veer towards a more a more 00’s pop/rock sound. Regardless of what they are labelled as they were great with heavy energetic bass and melodic lyrics. With the limited crowd they had they got everyone up enjoying themselves and the music on offer. However, I just wish we could see more energy from the lads in certain songs to evoke the passion and love they clearly have for their music.

HEYUP

In all a great gig and well organised thanks to the guys for having me down, I just wish the attendance was better especially as all the bands were from out of town as this was the perfect chance to experience new sounds and bands.
