After a hectic week and the anticipation growing, I got to cut it short with, what promised to be, a great gig. With headliners Brownbear accompanied by local Dundee band Th13ves and Edinburgh band Ded Rabbit the bands certainly delivered that promise.
Up first were local lads Th13ves. Now many of you who are avid readers of Discovery Music will have heard us raving about them over the past couple of months and quite rightly so. After what had seemed like months since I first caught them at their debut gig back in August supporting Kyle Falconer at Church I was excited to see what had changed and how Th13ves had progressed. Let me tell you they did not disappoint. In terms of stage presence and how comfortable they were together as a band on stage it was great improvement, something that obviously only comes with being on stage and performing together. It is no secret that Th13ves are a brilliant band with fantastic sound, from catchy vocals, like in their newest single that just dropped earlier this month “Casino”, to their impressive guitar riffs, like in their debut single “Dreamers”. It is great to see the lads, who have a wealth of knowledge of music and the local scene as individuals, put their heads together and create something special. Probably need to work on the patter though lads, talking about Aldi dark fruits just won’t cut it.
The penultimate band were Ded Rabbit a band I knew little about before this gig, but they left a lasting impression on me. The indie band, made up of four brothers, Eugene, Donal, Eoin and Fergus, currently study in Edinburgh but have been all over the place originally from Yorkshire, hence the accent. They’re up there as one of my favourite bands to see perform live this year. Being brought up around and loving indie music I felt like I had been catapulted back to being a kid in the 2000’s. It was as though the golden era of indie had been bottled and finally released into Beat Generator for me and a very select few (my count being 26 including band and bar staff). With a very energetic, electric and contagious mood created by the lads they had everyone loving it with some, ehm, questionable dancing from a very intoxicated crowd. In all an impressive performance by the brothers, and a band that have found their way onto my daily playlist.
Finally, headliners Brownbear, accompanied by special guest guitarist, local lad, Billy Mitchell. For those of you who don’t know Brownbear they’re a four piece from Ayrshire who have enjoyed a moderate amount of success in recent years, most notably joining The Libertines at their comeback gig at the Barrowlands Ballroom in 2014 and again at their BST Summertime gig at Hyde Park. The set by Brownbear was exactly what you’d expect from the boys and Billy seemed fit in seamlessly, you would have no idea they hadn’t practiced prior to this. The acoustic guitar played by Matt brings a campfire-esque vibe to the gig and brings real meaning each lyric that is sung and, as I said before, the intimacy of the set was amplified by the pitiful attendance by Dundee’s general public. In all a fantastic gig by the lads which leaves me excited to see what’s to come in 2019, for more on that keep your eyes peeled for the interview I got with Matt from Brownbear prior to this gig… Coming soon!
In all another fantastic gig in the local scene but unfortunately not the crowd too back it, the bands are doing their part so… WHERE ARE YOU!
