This gig was announced a while ago and I had been looking forward to it ever since. A wee trip into town and see some live music? There is nothing better.
First to take to the stage was Craig Weir. Being first on at a gig is never easy, especially when the venue is quiet. I must admit I hadn't heard of him before he took to the stage but he left a lasting impression. A fast paced set which was very enjoyable. Would be great to see again live, cannot beat a good acoustic act!
Next to take to the stage were somebody that are not a stranger to a Discovery Music gig review, Dundee's own Saint Louie. Having had some line up changes recently this was the first gig for the new line up. Leonard Crainie has joined on lead guitar and Seth Allen has joined as bassist. With these new additions it has taken Saint Louie's sound down a different route than before but one that sounds great. The new base lines and lead guitar solos have been a welcome addition to their sets in particular. A typically top notch performance from the 4 piece who entertained the fast growing crowd that was building in Beat Gen.
The penultimate band to take to the stage were ,another band who are no stranger to being written about by us, Novella. I have loved following the band from the start. After a few technical issues with both microphone and lead guitar, through no fault of their own, at the start of their set they managed to produce a really good performance. With each performance the band are getting stronger and stronger which is great to see. They rounded of their set with a cover of Slade's Merry Christmas Everybody which went down very well with the large crowd. Who doesn't love a mass Christmas sing-a-long?
Finally it was time for Billy Mitchell to take to the stage in Dundee for the first time in what has felt like forever and he did not disappoint. He has assembled a "best of Dundee" backing band, which consists of Paddy Brown on bass, Megan Mcnally on lead guitar and Michael Clenaghan on drums. I have seen Billy perform a number of times solo but when he plays it full band it takes his performance to another level. Its easy to see how much he performs to a crowd and having a laugh with the crowd between songs "who's bought a t shirt then?" was asked on more than one occasion. Billy's set with also troubled for a time with sound issues with his guitar but after a brief stoppage to sort it, we were underway again. Playing through his catalogue of songs including Mother, Psycho and All You Got. The crowd were also treated to some new songs from Billy that went down well. All in all a great performance on return to a stage in Dundee and hopefully it won't be another year until the next gig!
