What a better way to welcome the weekend than a superb Friday night at The Cellar. In the week leading up to gig, I had the chance to listen to some music from the upcoming performers and found some favourites amongst Audiokicks songs like “Still You Stay”. However, on the day of the gig we received an announcement that Audiokicks would not be performing due to illness. Regardless, here at Discovery Music we hope they are feeling better soon and make a speedy recovery. It would be wonderful to see the band on stage again in due time! Despite the news, we were still lucky enough to have a great band stand in and take the stage.
The Ruptured Ducklings were our saviours that night and they certainly didn’t disappoint. If the name alone wasn’t enough to convince you, this four-piece band from Aberdeen had a contagious energy on stage and served a really fun dynamic as a band. Delivering punchy beats and a distinct rock vibe to the stage, The Ruptured Ducklings brought a great finale to the night and pleasantly surprised me with singles like “Dark Thoughts”. This particularly stood out to me for the moody but enticing style. They also presented us with their newest single “Help Me”, which features a much quicker and snappy beat that energised the room.
The supporting acts for the night were also superb and ranged in diverse sounds and style. Each artist brought something different to the stage and in an indie/rock environment, that change is really refreshing. So, it goes without saying that an acoustic set to introduce the night was a perfect start, with Kyle MacRitchie (from the band Vansleep) taking stage. Playing us a few covers as well as songs of his own, Kyle MacRitchie has a voice that is bound to turn heads. Smooth flowing lyrics made for an easy-listening and inviting first performance. It was a set I was looking forward to as I really enjoy acoustic music, so this was definitely a highlight of the night.
Second on stage, I was taken aback by the pure volume coming from Connor Clark and The Matador Kings. No doubt these guys were the loudest and most stimulating band of the night, raising the energy with pulsating rock music. The band has just released their newest single, “Echoes and Patience” which we had the pleasure of listening to live, as well as other great songs that influenced their strong rock style. With a prominent guitar and strong melody, Connor Clark and The Matador Kings were great to get the room moving.
Next up we have our last supporting act before The Ruptured Duckings. Bouncing on stage was The Medicine Priests, who really made the most of their time and presented us with one of the most fun and invigorating performances of the night. Sadly, this was one of their final shows but I’m so glad I got to listen and meet the band before they part ways. “High" and “Someone Special” were highlights for me as the band very obviously had fun performing. The Medicine Priests created an atmosphere that stuck with the room and became a great addition to the line-up for the night.
I really enjoyed my time at The Cellar, and it has me hyped to see more local acts in Aberdeenshire. It’s a cosy venue that gave me the chance to chat to some lovely people, and the sound that bounces off the walls created an electric atmosphere that kept with me all night. I would happily visit again, and I would definitely revisit the bands that were present – and hopefully I’ll have a chance to see Audiokicks sometime soon after their recovery.
