After a long arduous 3 month wait, the day was upon us. After a surreal afternoon meeting, sitting down and having chat with Johnny Took from DMA'S it was time to kick back and enjoy the fantastic music these lads had to offer. Supported by two exciting up and coming musical talents in Rosborough and the more widely known Neon Waltz it was sure to be spectacle.
First up were Rosborough a singer/songwriter hailing from the county of Derry in Northern Ireland. Now unfortunately once we had made it to the gig their set had already begun missing the first quarter of their set. But from what we heard its easy to see why they were on the bill with great mix of toe-tapping beats in songs such as “Fall to Earth” to thought-provoking lyrics in “Another Lesson”. A fantastic opener, for what will be a bookmark event in Barrowlands history, to get the crowd buzzed for what was to come.
Next up were Neon Waltz, now we're no strangers to Neon Waltz here at Discovery Music, I got the opportunity to catch them at their headline gig in Dundee back in May so thought I knew what I was in for, but unknown to me I didn’t. I’m not sure if it’s a slight change in the line up or just a different crowd and experience but they have in my opinion taken their sound to a different level and their newest single “The Stranger Things” is their best. In all I think I was quite critical of Neon Waltz when I first heard their sound and never gave them much credit but I’m glad to say I’ve since been proven wrong. With the melodic lyrics of “The Stranger Things” and another of their hits “Dreamers” they had the whole crowd joining in and singing along getting everyone hyped up for what was to come.
Finally, the time was upon us the buzz around the once dance hall was something spectacular, everyone packed from front to back like sardines just to catch a glimpse and experience the DMA’S. As they were waiting in the wings “The La’s – There She Goes” began to play and a choir of music lovers out-sang the audio system, something that was to be a recurring theme of the night. Starting off with the set with “Play it out” a personal favourite of mine the crowd just went crazy and their passion was intoxicating it was impossible not to enjoy yourself. Going onto play main hits such as “Delete”, “Step Up the Morphine” and fan favourite the harmonic tune that is “Emily Whyte”, a unique song that had even the most stubborn of music lovers singing and swaying along too. Shout out to Mason for such a fantastic tune, it just begs the question who is Emily Whyte? After leaving the stage the crowd was not shifting and a rapturous chant of “DM, DM, DM F**king A’S” filled the air to which the lads responded. Coming back on to play a 3-song encore with the last being “Lay Down” the perfect ending for any DMA’S gig.
In all probably the best gig in which I have ever attended and never an absurd 5/10 a solid 10/10, a perfect representation that the indie scene is on the incline and who better to lead it than the DM FUCKING A’S?!
