Flawlessly blending characteristics of grunge and desert rock in their music, Glasgow based four-piece CRYSTAL are undoubtedly an exciting prospect for 2019. Having undergone a few line-up changes since their beginnings, the band are set to unleash their new single ‘SEX RICH’ this Friday and ourselves at Discovery Music have been lucky enough to hear a sneak preview before release.
Their latest release ‘HEAVEN’, has aptly been described as a ‘Wolf Alice meets Queens of the Stone Age’ track brimming with jagged guitars and hypnotic vocals which the likes of Wolf Alice’s Ellie Rowsell has become renowned for. ‘SEX RICH’ follows suit from the offset with frontwoman Anna’s distorted and compressed vocals luring you in with ease as she propels the track’s intensity to raucous proportions approaching the chorus where Strokes-esque vocal effects tease and flare as she proclaims, ‘what you gonna do with all your money? / Oh, you’re so funny’, which – with its dominant, no-holds-barred vocal approach – pays homage to tracks such as ‘Yuk Foo’ and ‘Hey Heartbreaker’ from Wolf Alice and Dream Wife respectively. Towards the end of the track (to ramp things up even further) the band change to a half-time tempo with dirty, ravenous guitar lines combined with a stellar drum performance the focal points reaching the song’s climax.
Speaking to Electric Fields festival last year about the day’s proposed featuring acts, Anna mentions, "I think what I find most appealing is the diversity within the lineup. As a frontwoman of a rock band it's so inspiring to share the stage with a multitude of other amazing, strong women”. Indeed, with the rise of bands such as Dream Wife, Wolf Alice and recent Best Breakthrough Act award winners for Q Magazine, Goat Girl, it has been long overdue to see women rightly honing stages across the country particularly in rock and the surrounding genres with CRYSTAL proving to be no exception to this. Their potential evidently knows no bounds and with a healthy host of festival performances already behind them along with vast critical acclaim, 2019 is set to be full of prosperity for the Glaswegian outfit.
Usually, I like to include some further relevant info / achievements about a specific act from over the past few months but – in-keeping with CRYSTAL’s direct, no frills attitude – I’ll be frank. The band play at King Tut’s on 19th Jan alongside fellow Glasgow rockers Walt Disco. Buy a ticket. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
