A band of four consisting of Bradley Kennedy (vocals), Paddy Brown (guitar), Connor Wylie (bass), and Michael Clenaghan (drums), Dundee-based Carousel has paved their way from their debut single “See You Go” to recording their “Show the World” EP, having airplay in multiple US radio shows, industry mentions from the likes of Jim Gellatly (The Sun), and performing two tours around Scotland – all in just two years.
Although still a new band to many people, Carousel evokes a sense of familiarity and vulnerability with the audience in their new single, available on Spotify and iTunes.
Admittedly tender in the beginning, the song enters with a commanding, uplifting piano accompanying the divulging voice of Bradley Kennedy. The way that the vocals follow the top melody of the piano suggests straight away that it’s a song to sing along to (which is a common giveaway for anthemic styles of music).
As if reminiscing alongside him, we’re presented flashes of memories that give a sense of familiarity through the video, like talking to an old friend. Then, evolving from the sensitive, secluded introduction is a more sure-spoken narrative that equals the liveliness of the instruments, guided by the driving thump of the drums. Sonically, the song is quite uplifting and hopeful.
“You should never walk down the road alone when you’ve got someone like me”
This is a sweet phrase nestled in the end of the verses, and it sums up the song completely. When the lyrics are vulnerable and, in ways, selfish in the beginning, a compassionate moment in a song, however brief, is like lyrical candy floss – somewhat complicated, yet simply sweet.
Reinforced by the consistent bass and the supporting counter-melodies of the guitar, the verses keep you on your toes until the chorus blares out in full chords and root notes – the musical complexities keeping us interested are swapped from the interweaving accompaniment to the stacked vocal harmonies that mimic the lead. Carousel’s attention to detail is evident in the music – and the video, too, which has just the right measure of aesthetic gruff and grit alongside the visual effects that help amplify the lyrical content – and is greatly appreciated. Overall, a perfect introduction for new listeners, and as gratifying as Carousel's dedication to their day-one supporters.
Something worth noting – this single is helping fund a GoFundMe campaign to help Tracey Burke with her fight against cancer. Along with limited stock of their other vinyl releases, Carousel has announced that all of their proceeds from the new single will go towards helping Tracey get the treatment she needs.
There’s no doubt that Carousel has more to offer for this year. Follow them on social media to be in the loop and buy Carousel’s new single to support a good cause.
