Craig-Russell Horne - 'Safe' Review 30/08/18

Glasgow based electronic pop musician, Craig Russell Horne is slowly but surely cultivating an unassailable following and reputation for himself around the Scottish Music scene. Craig previously was a vocalist and guitarist for the Glasgow Alt Rock band 21st State, who were prevalent among the live music scene in Scotland during 2016 & 2017. Craig has performed in numerous venues such as Classic Grand, Queen Margaret Union and King Tuts for its annual Summer Nights Events.

Managing to make the switch between Alt rock to Electronic Pop, as well as transitioning from a band to going solo clearly hasn’t been much of a challenge for Craig. After much praised performances earlier this year and a successful EP ‘Robotz and Machinez’ Craig has debuted his latest single ‘Safe’.

Mirroring some of his previous work, this track is heavily on the electronic side, in particular EDM with only small doses of indie & alternative influences to accompany it. Featured on the track is a short intro which essentially is an orchestral type sample which creates a damp and gloomy atmosphere, throwing the listener off when first experiencing the song.

As soon as the main section of the track arrives it dives head first into the chorus, displaying its clear EDM and Pop sound. Right away, stark electronic drums are accompanied by heavily distorted auto tuned vocals, which remain consistent throughout the remainder of the song. The tempo of the track stays the same throughout its entirety with a slight change in tone towards the latter half of the track. Craig’s voice for the most part is complemented tremendously by the tracks instrumentation and production.

Similar to other Scottish acts before him in particular Biffy Clyro (Simon Neil) & Twin Atlantic (Sam McTrusty), Craig uses his Scottish accent when singing, which is always a great characteristic for Scottish bands to incorporate into their music.

Craig has transitioned from playing in a band to becoming a solo musician and has done so very successfully. He has managed to create a unique sounding track which features some well gelled production and a blend of intriguing sounds. This single looks to be a great progression for Craig’s newly embarked solo career and it will be interesting to see what else he brings to the table later this year.
