Once this gig was announced back in March, I have been looking forward to it happening. Usually a Thursday night for me is looking forward to Friday and the weekend happening but with a gig on it was a great excuse to start the weekend early although as I write this I am currently nursing a hangover.
First up was Taylor-Ray who is a young Dundee artist that has a lot of potential and last night was the first time I had managed to catch her perform in person. With a decent crowd in early to see her, the audience were treated to a brilliant set containing some of her own songs but also a few covers which were outstanding, including Joy Divisions Love Will Tear Us Apart and Fleetwood Mac's Dreams. Having came across Taylor-Ray on Facebook with her song Gentlelady sometime ago I have been keeping an eye on her work and hope to hear more of her music. She reminds me of a young Amy Macdonald- a great songwriter and power voice. Keep up the good work!
Next up were Luke La Volpe. Admittedly I didn't know much about the 4 piece band from Bathgate but after this performance I will be keeping a close eye on them in the future. They played a great set in their bluesy rock and roll style of music which is very well suited to the lead singers voice. As a band that has been tipped as one to watch for 2018 I can certainly see why they are making big waves in the Scottish music scene. If they are playing a gig near you then I highly recommend that you go and see them. You won't be disappointed!
The penultimate act was local Dundee artist Billy Mitchell. For anybody familiar with the local Dundee music scene, Billy is one of the most well known and recognisable face of it. Billy has previously played in Dundee band The Twist and most recently played as part of Kyle Falconer band who supported Liam Gallagher on a few dates of his UK tour. He has recently released his newest single Psycho which is an absolute belter of a tune, which was part of his set. As always, his set was full of passion and energy which is to be expected when seeing Billy live. It is always a pleasure to see him live and this gig was no different.
Finally it was time for the headliners Brownbear. They have recently recently released their new album What Is Home, which is a great selection of well constructed tunes and a must for any summer playlist. I have been wanting to see them for a while now and what better chance to see them for the first time than in my own city. Result! Dundee was the first gig on their Scottish tour and they kicked it off in style, a performance full of energy and passion that was really pleasing on the ear. It was a performance that felt like it was over as soon as it started and made you wanting them to continue on for the rest of the night. I cannot stress enough if you get a chance to see these guys at a gig near you then definitely go and see them!
Finally, a big well done goes to Dougie at GJ Promotions for putting another belter of a gig in Dundee.
