BOOTlace/ Youth and Joy (Single)/ 29.09.18

Updated: Sep 29, 2018

This trio from Dundee are making their music known in their stunning debut single, Youth and Joy.

BOOTlace present to us a simple but joyous beat that coaxes their listeners into a musically inclusive experience. Youth and Joy is a very thoughtful piece which is reflected through the hard-hitting lyrics and powerful vocals. All the emotion is transferred beautifully with singer Joseph Young, and the band have created a sound that has me thoroughly engrossed in their next steps.

Uploaded on their Soundcloud are a larger selection of songs, which gave me a better taste of their music, but there is no doubt that Youth and Joy is stand out track amongst their discography. I believe there was almost a folk sound at some of the slower parts of the song, with the guitar creating an active but heartening sound.

It doesn’t take away from the genre they’re aiming for however, if someone was to ask me what type of music BOOTlace produced, I would still class them as an indie rock band.

The theme presented brings a sense of nostalgia to listeners, and despite the topic it still seems to have an air of uplift. BOOTlace is exploring the raw emotion that comes with growth and yet the song is anything but solemn which is what I love so much about Youth and Joy. They’ve managed to capture the good and bad parts of falling in love and getting older. I didn’t realise how much I would enjoy the single when I first heard it, but as I began to really listen to the lyrics and take note of their lead guitarist and drums, I found myself wanting to hear more.

Even the artwork for the single had me nostalgic to younger days when my friends and I would take pictures of our shadows at the park. Whether these sentimental elements are intentional or not, I think there is a part of Youth and Joy that anyone can relate to. There is a humble appearance to it which is enough to knock their listeners off their feet when listening for the first time, a song full of passion crashing through.

Overall, I believe that BOOTlace has set the bar high and created a song that reins captivating and thoughtful. This single is like the opening to a bigger creative project. It’s exciting because I want to know where they take it – to me, Youth and Joy was a sneak peek into the wonders that BOOTlace can produce, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
