Having not done a gig review for a wee while, what better way than to do one for one of the most anticipated gigs of the past few weeks? Prior to doors opening, all the tickets had sold out. The venue was Beat Generator Live! in Dundee, a mini version of The King Tuts in Glasgow in the sense of a compact, sweaty venue with a decent sound system with a capacity of around 300. If only they would hire a more gig friendly bouncer but anyway back to the music. Having saw these guys back at the start of January at Clark's on Lindsay Street in Dundee, I was wondering how far the electric duo had come in the past few months. The answer is a lot but first lets talk about the support acts.
First up were The Roques. I first saw these guys as support for The Wholls at Conroys Basement in Dundee on my birthday last month. I believe this was their first gig and it was decent. With another month of practice under their belts it was evident with the band sounding more tight and the band clearly enjoying themselves, even though they didn't look it by their expressions! Their debut tune "Day By Day" was released onto all streaming sites before their first gig and it sounded even better live. It's always good to see new up and coming indie band from Dundee, showing that the local music scene isn't dead. They have a pretty decent following as I've witnessed at the two gigs they have played at. Overall a solid performance from the Dundee 5 piece band, hopefully I get the chance to see them at another gig in the future.
Next up were The Medinas. The Dundee 4 piece have been playing gigs quite a lot recently which is always a good thing to help build up confidence and grow your audience. Having listened to them online, in particular their single "Daisy Chains" which is a very catchy tune, this was the first chance I have had to see them in person I think, although I apologise if I've forgotten if I have! The young band have good potential and like The Roques they have a decent following. They played a good set, although they pulled out a crowd-pleaser by doing a cover of "Same Jeans" by The View. This was a clever addition to their set as it had the place bouncing. Good performance and set lads! Look forward to seeing them at a gig in the future also.
The penultimate band up were The Traaps. Having not heard of them before I was interested to see what they were like. Their social media pages lack information but the electric duo were decent, even though I couldn't tell you where they were from. A good use of guitars, keyboards and drum machines resulted in a catchy, electric sound. A decent set, hopefully they can get more tunes uploaded so I can listen to them a bit more!
Finally it was time for the main event. Enter the stage Beta Waves. There was a long build up before the guys finally took to the stage but this only helped to build the atmosphere. As they took to the stage, a packed capacity crowd watched on. Having had the privilege of listening to a few unreleased tracks from them, it was fantastic to hear them live. Prior to this gig they had released the highly catchy tune "I Think I'm Melting" which was well received right across the Scottish music scene, quite impressive for the Dundee duo who haven't been performing together for that long. Their newest single "Let It Out" is arguably better than their first single.Hearing this live was brilliant, a blend of synthesisers and guitar riffs along with catchy lyrics resulted in a great sounding tune. For the last few songs Megan Mcnally from Dundee band Sahara joined the guys on stage to add an extra guitar element to the songs, something which worked very well. Overall a great performance and they deservedly got the recognition from the crowd after their set, I just wish it went on for longer! I Cannot wait for what they have in store single wise but I can guarantee it will be another belter of a tune. Hopefully I can get the chance to see them in the not too distant future as with every gig they are getting better and better. One to definitely look out for in 2018. Great performance.
How much did this night of great music cost? A grand total of £6. If that's not a bargain then I don't know what is. Well done to local promoter Jaggers Lips for arranging such a fantastic gig.
