GIG REVIEW: Beta Waves @ Church Dundee, 28/10/18

What could be better to get you through a stressful day than knowing that you will be going to your local music venue to see an array of musical talent? Nothing is the answer! For me it was a dive into the unknown of all new bands for my ears to feast on.

First up was Devon, a 20-year-old singer/songwriter from Gloucestershire taking inspiration from a multitude of different bands and genres from Michael Jackson all the way to Twenty-One pilots. Devon as a live set is unlike anything I’ve witnessed/heard before. With an almost dark tone mixed with pop like beats and indie infused guitar and drum it really is a great cocktail of music. Devon as an act certainly know how to put on a show from great toe tapping beats like in “Weirdo” to the pop-esque lyrics that had the entire crowd singing along by the to “Day Dreaming”, I must admit I still can’t stop singing it. The only down side to Devon is that I cannot see more of them until they announce another Scottish gig, they’re certainly now a personal favourite of mine.

Devon

Next to the stage were the band Parliamo a five-piece indie/pop band from another Tayside city, Perth. Bringing a barrage of fans and support from along the road it was great to see a local venue packed to the rafters for an up and coming band. Their heavy hitting bass lines and intricate guitar make for a great atmosphere. You could clearly see the love and the passion from the lads for what they’re creating and that resonated with the crowd and their fans. The only slightly negative part of their set was the “dancing” and actions from Jack on vocals sometimes made it visually awkward to watch, trying a bit too hard to be the late Joy Division signer Ian Curtis. In a whole a solid, lively performance from the Perth lads and a crucial step in them creating a wider spread audience across the Scottish music scene.

Next up were headliners Beta Waves. Now just like the previous two bands I was going into this blind, or should I say deaf, having neglected to listen to them. The duo certainly has one of the more unorthodox set-ups I have seen grace the stage at Church and they had me intrigued from the start. With Harry using a plethora of synths, Dale on vocals and guitar it’s a mix which live shouldn’t really work, but it really does and when I say it really does I mean it REALLY does. It was one of the most interesting, captivating and hypnotic sets I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing. Beta Waves take a completely different path to anything that is being done within the local scene, bring about a genre Dundee didn’t know it was even missing. It was clear to see by the love and reaction from the crowd Beta Waves have provided the answer to that.

Beta Waves

In all a brilliant showcase for talent up and down the country and at £8 a ticket it’s an absolute steal!
