I’m going to tell you aww about a wee movement in Perth. A movement that has taken 2018 by storm and grown with each event. Events so burstin' with talent it’s hard to get any space in the room (could be because of all the egos- I'm no sure!). I'm going to tell you aww about The Counter Culture Collective and their subsequent events.
Self-proclaimed as the fair city’s very own 'Counter Culture’ sounds. It’s a collective made up of guitarists, bassists, beatboxers, rappers, producers, spoken word artists and just aboot anyone who wants to join.
Over the past year Cx3 have brought Perth a whole range of nights from Open Mic, to Perth’s very first monthly Hip Hop night to now it’s 5th Counter Culture Collective Night. Every event bringing you something completely different, totally wacky and absolutely fucking mental.
Driver of the Cx3, Barkryte has worked to push the local hip hop and rap scene through these events and in turn has created quite an appetite for it. Teaming up with Perth and beyond's biggest talents to bring the finest ae nights here to the fair city. Whilst actively seeking opportunities for those in the collective to better themselves. Having been to a few events before I can guarantee you will enjoy this one and leave totally inspired. The three events I've been to have all been shit fkn hot.
Their latest event, Battle o' the Green Room will be bring rappers from all corners of oor bonnie wee country to compete with each other in, what may be, Perth’s biggest ever rap battle. All cosied up with a headline set from Jackal Trades, supported by hip hop covers and a live music cypher from The Purple Felts.
Battles as follows (appreciate the fact it took me 45 years to individually find this lot on FB):
Ross Houston (Jailz) v Darren Stewart (Zee) Kamihamiha! v Barkryte Young Brido v Steven McLean (Mc Lean) Rudez the Rapper v James McLaren (McLarenn) Minches v Neil Short
Showcase: Mackenzie
Judges on the night: Mark McGee, Jay Supa, Macapella with DJ JMD.
The social media banter has been absolutely priceless (see above artwork of rapper himself Barkryte - it's actually pretty spot on). With aww the troops keen to get involved and make the night a huge success. Cx3 #5 is a night not for the faint-hearted, but it is one you'll no be forgetting in a longtime.
"We will be branching out in the new year and taking Perth hip hop on the road, as well as broadening our horizons at home. Looking to host a range of events from acoustic gatherings to the nightclub environment. Putting on the best show we can is the goal, every time. Providing a platform for artists is high on the agenda as well and with that comes the party!! Get involved!!
2019... we on that! “ - The Counter Culture Collective
Barkryte has been working very hard on developing a new studio based out of Icebreaker HQ in Perth with Scottish producer Andy 'Macapella' Macfarlane (another one of Scotland's finest talents may I add!). The Unit, which is predominately used right now for recording Perth Podcast Monkey Sword Fight (get on that by the way!) and the Cx3 recordings, videos & jams. However I do believe the fellas will also be taking bookings so get onto them on their social channels for more info.
This night is set to be another crackin’ event from Cx3. The Collective who now run a number of nights throughout Perth are a pivotal piece to Perth’s growing music & culture scene- and soon to be Scotland's. Get down on Friday evening (30th Nov), raffle prices to won, battles to hud, 8pm, nae excuses.
Follow the night across the Discovery Music social channels as well as my own personal channels.
