This year, I got the opportunity to cover the Scottish Album of the Year (SAYs) awards on behalf of Discovery Music. As this was my first year attending, I had no idea what to expect but what an experience it was!

The SAY Award Ceremony

The award ceremony hosted by Vic Galloway and Nicola Meighan was held in the extravagant Assembly Room, a beautiful historical venue in Edinburgh.

Throughout the night, there were live performances from some a great variety of Scottish talent including, ‘Lylo’, ‘Heir of the Cursed’, ‘Cucina Povera’ and ‘Man of Moon’.

There was a large attendance from a huge range of interesting representatives within the music industry. It was a great networking event as well and I met a lot of cool, exciting people! Everyone attending all shared the same passion and music as myself, so it was lovely getting to know some more people from the industry.

The shortlisted candidates for the award included, ‘Kathryn Joseph’, ‘C Duncan’, ‘Carla Easton’, Aiden Moffat and RM Hubbert’, ‘Andrew Wasylyk, ‘Fergus Mcreadie trio’, ‘Karine Polwart with Steven Polwart and Inge Thomson’, ‘Mastersystem’ and ‘Free Love’. All incredibly talented Scottish musicians from all different musical backgrounds. A great variety of candidates but in the end, it was Brian d'Souza better known as Auntie Flo, with his album, ‘Radio Highlife’ that won!

The Winning Album 2019

For those who aren't quite familiar with Auntie Flo's music, the Glasgow based DJ is a electronic sensation in which he's performed worldwide including Africa, Australia and North America!

Auntie Flo was actually performing a set at Skye Festival during the ceremony so his tour manager, Phil Connor accepted the award on his behalf and read d'Souza's acceptance speech from a napkin - totally rock n roll!

One of our aims at Discovery Music is to get more recognition within the Scottish electronic scene so we couldn't be more thrilled when we found out Auntie Flo won this prestigious award.

An incredible night celebrating one of the biggest awards in the Scottish music industry!
